Still hope?

It seems to me that time is running out. My son was waitlisted last year and heard that news around March 26th. The more time goes by the more anxious we get.

Is there still reason to hope?

Yes, there is still hope. Until the TWE arrives, which could be as late as April 15th, he is still in the hunt.

I don't know why some kids here so quickly and for others, it takes forever. Do you ?

Partially, the number they throw out every year about applications is 20,000. There's some contention about those numbers because USNA counts just opening a file (NASS application, unfinished application, checking the "interested in USNA" box on the NROTC app) but there are still a lot of applications and it takes them awhile to get through them.

Additionally, not everyone is a certain yes or no. There's a full spectrum of kids applying to USNA. Some might be a definite yes at the first glance of their application, and some might be a definite no. But as they get to the end of filling up the class, those who are more middle of the pack might take multiple reviews of their application.

There is hope till the twe arrives. DD still waiting after turn down last year and prep school this fall. We are all right here with you waiting somewhat impatiently and finger crossed, till the last appointment is given!

A ton of factors go into the timing. Of my BGO slate, I have two candidates that were virtually identical, one received an Appointment over a month ago, the other is still under review. The one still waiting had a completed packet in before any of my other candidates. It's a process...

So, I'm curious, how do BGO's keep tabs on status of their slate of candidates? Do they have a special kind of portal access that lets them see the status of their "slate," or do they get communications from admissions with updates, or is it just feedback from candidates?

Yes. They have their own BGO portal.

Yes. They have their own BGO portal.

Assuming that the BGO portal shows the candidates' Congressional district (even though they may not know which nom source was actually charged, if more than one nom source exists), are BGOs at liberty to share that info if asked? As in, "Why, yes, in fact, there's been a candidate appointment from the 92nd district of Calizona, it was offered on 1 February."? As a BGO, would you recommend candidates ask for such intel? The MoC's staffers seem pretty tight-lipped.

I'm not aware of any specific prohibition on BGOs providing info on whether "a candidate" from a particular district was appointed. Obviously, providing names -- and probably even schools -- would be considered a privacy issue. However, to what end would someone ask or would this info be helpful? More than one candidate can be appointed from a district (in our area, it's common for quite a few off each slate to receive appointments) so that fact that someone has been appointed means nothing as to another's chances.

I would probably not provide the info if asked (and I've never been asked) for the above reason. Also, in certain areas where, for example, only a couple of people even applied, providing the above information could essentially be providing the name of the person who was appointed, and we're not allowed to do that.

I recommend not asking your BGO as it could put him/her in an awkward situation.

Great Posts Doolie. My DS has not spoken to his BGO since a week after interview. No other reason than he is a very patient young man. Yesterday I saw first crack in the wall, when he said "You think we should call someone?" my response was stay patient good or bad its almost over. Any upside or info if he were to put a call into BGO. Also every once and awhile you will see a post on the sight that implies that applicant has a pretty close relationship with BGO. Was my DS not forming a bond with BGO a mistake?

Absolutely not! Some BGOs have closer bonds with candidates in general -- maybe because they have very few candidates or have a lot of free time or are just more involved. And some BGOs have closer bonds with certain candidates than with others. That's human nature -- just as you may have people at work, school, church, in your neighborhood, etc. that you feel closer to than others. It happens but it makes no difference.

BGOs have ZERO decision-making power regarding whether a candidate is or is not accepted. While BGOs do submit interview write-ups, they count for very little in the vast scheme of things. Your BGO won't get a candidate into USNA and really can't keep him/her out (save some very unusual situations). So do not fret -- and don't let your DS fret -- about whether or not he has a "bond" with his BGO or even likes his BGO.

DS's BGO has been pretty close and available, he gives regular updates, and "hang in there, it wont be much longer" encouragement. But we're hesitant to ask that particular question. BGO reached out invited DS and us to the regional USNA alum gathering during the holidays. IDK if he invited the whole slate or what, but we were the only ones to take him up on it and actually attended the event. BGO sat with us and then made sure to introduce DS to all of the faculty and admin personnel, and really schmoozed DS up to the muckity-mucks, "I want you to meet my top candidate" which I thought was really generous. Anyway, just a data point, who knows if it'll make any difference having such an encouraging/involved BGO. We just have to wait and see.

Do not call your BGO asking for information on status. We don't know, or can't tell you , much more than , the candidate is CPR. We know when one of our Candidates has been appointed, but really don't know which MOC he/she is charged too, so telling you whether there have been other Candidates appointed can only cause unnecessary angst.

. BGO's are all different, and how they related to their Candidates varies, but its not the BGO's role to rank or promote one Candidate over another. Naturally, we have opinions and even favorites, but the goal is to give an objective evaluation to assist Admissions in evaluating the Candidates. Also, keep in mind, the BGO doesn't necessarily know how one candidates stacks up against others academically, on CFA, or myriad of other factors that go into the WCS. Personally, I would be very reluctant to tell one candidate that he/she is "my top candidate".
