Still no stipend?

Hey guys, so my son's on an AFROTC Type 1 Scholarship and still hasn't gotten his stipend yet. The local detachment folks put in a help ticket back in December and it still hasn't gotten fixed. Their answer seems to be that "the system is really screwed up right now" and there's nothing we can do.

Any suggestions? He's been there since August and has only gotten his travel reimbursement. I really don't want to get involved but I'm feeling the frustration.

well if you REALLY want to rock the boat your Congressman , more accurately your son's Congressman, has constituent services people who can ask uncomfortable questions, they usually do this rather high up in the food chain, it rolls down hill from there.

It could be the solution is worse than the problem in this case

Oh geez, I don’t want to take it even close to that far. I was thinking a phone call to someone at AFROTC HQ...maybe there’s a contact that deals with pay issues?

Don't get involved. Parental meddling in officer training programs is not a good look.

This won't be the last time your son has to fix issues with his pay. It's good that he is learning to stay on top of it now.

...and that action will dog him the rest of the career. "The cadet with a parent that contacted the Congressman to get his stipend payment."

Definitely is a solution that is worse than the problem. :)

I was suggesting maybe your son make that call if it's truly an issue. I suspect at the end of the day , month , year ... he'll get the $$$ For most the stipend is beer or amazon prime money - for a few it's a pretty serious issue in making ends meet

Right, I really don’t want to get involved with HIS chain. I was just hoping to get some advice to pass on. I think he’s afraid to make any noise as well, that sort of things doesn’t look good..especially as a new cadet.

He’s made do by living very frugally while hoping with every 1st and 15th that passes he’d see a deposit. I’m sure the money will come but I just thought if he took care of the issue himself (versus relying on his chain) things might move faster.

He should be persistent but respectful. Check in with the POC handling it on a weekly basis, keep his cadre involved, express that it is causing a hardship (if it is).

I hate that it is happening to him, but seriously-- it will happen multiple times throughout his career.

Yes, that's typically the best approach, but waiting on cadre might be about all he can do at the moment. Reaching out to HQ AFROTC directly would be a little weird. I would imagine his cadre have already done that...

Roger that. I’ll tell him to just keep being “respectfully persistent”. Thanks!

When did he contract? If he was an Army Cadet I would suggest that he stop by HQ tomorrow, find the HRA, and let him or her know you haven’t been paid yet. I’m sure there is a similar person in the AF det...too easy. If they submitted a pay inquiry in December, sounds like it’s time to submit another. Might also want to make sure bank account and routing numbers are correct.

I certainly agree with that, and besides asking if things have been straightened out; I'd also be asking what the plan is to move the ball forward.

Does stipend pay come from DFAS? Does it generate an LES?

If so, MyPay might shed some light on it. Maybe

Does he know if he is the only person with this problem? This is probably a DFAS issue. Tell him to make sure he has a trouble ticket number from his ADMIN office. After he has that, he can call DFAS directly (daily if necessary) and be a pain in the butt until he gets paid.

I’m not sure what DFAS is ,but it’s listed in my son’s bank statements.
