Still on the island thread

It is only safe to assume you are still in the game until you get a TWE. Be patience and let the process run its course. Good luck and don't chew all your nails off.

If all candidates must be notified (decision or WL in hand) by April 15th they must have decisions by the end of the week. Mailing will take at least a few days. That makes me believe all slates are decided and most of us are competing in the national pool now.

The 15th is on a Wednesday. I believe they still have a good two weeks to go over applications and make their original decisions on the applicants. Can only hope for the best for myself and the others here who haven't received word yet!

Well I was speaking roughly. My main point is that I believe most of us are competing in the national pool at this point.

DS (and mid-sib) still waiting in PA-12. Has NROTC at Schreyer's Honors College at Penn State U as back up, which I suppose he should firm up this week. Such a different experience from his big brother (class of 17) who had LOA in August, appointment in November. I guess it's good to experience admissions from all perspectives, but I much prefer the other way. Best of luck to all who are still waiting.
If you don't mind me asking, and please don't answer if you wish not to. How did big brothers resume compare to younger brother?

Definitely not doubting that! Most, if not all, MOC slates should have been charged already... or at least I think so.

Not that last year was the "norm" by any means, but I know some of the candidates still waiting heard via email ON April 15th what their fate was.

Now thats a good point... Never thought of it that way. That could show that the entire national pool hasnt been made yet.

My thought is that a big wave of TWEs needs to be followed by a big wave of BFEs..... hoping that is the wave we all catch and surf in. This upcoming week maybe???

When do appointees have to make their decisions? Is it before or after April 15?
It is by May 1, or within a week of being notified of the appointment, whichever comes later.

Good luck to all who are waiting to hear. I am checking anxiously every day - I feel connected to you and am hoping for the best news possible for all of you!

They are nearly identical, actually. Class of '17 Mid had the advantage of having his package complete in July after taking ACT and SAT just once and getting high enough scores that he did not have to retake tests. When Admissions Board reviewed him at first meeting, he was "done" and they issued him the LOA with just need for a nomination. Hopeful younger brother also had package complete in July and was reviewed at one of the first Admissions Board meetings, but his subsequent test scores were higher than the ones he had upon first review (30 but went up to 32; 2050 went up to 2170). While he was deemed "3Q," he didn't knock their socks off because his scores weren't high enough for LOA at the time of that review. Otherwise, same swim background (captains, MVPs, State team, year-round club); same leadership (Boy's State, NHS officers, etc.); same amount of volunteering; same number of APs; same GPA; similar CFT scores.) I really think it came down to timing. It was great that they both had their packages complete early, but perhaps Midsib should have held off completing his application until he could put his very best forward for his Admissions Board review. My understanding is that although the Whole Person Score changes for applicants when new information is submitted, the Admissions Board only reviews a candidate once -- then it's up to the admissions office. (I am unclear as to whether or not the Admissions office issues LOAs. I think only the Review Board does that.) I hope this makes sense!

Hi G.,
It was my understanding that our '17 boys went through an early board that is made up of different characters (more teachers etc) than later admissions reviews (more admissions officers). The way I understood it it was the early LOA process was a different process and is finished before the official reviews start. I also think '17 year seemed to be the high point of early LOAs. though I would like clarification on as well.

My guess (and i know we have chatted at length on this) is those pesky act scores. Did '19 ever get them as hi as '17? (just asking for info for my possible '21)

So I am wondering if the key isnt early high scores + early finish for LOA (which are going by the wayside) and for regular timeline admissions the variable is act score/relative to competitiveness of the geography IN THAT PARTICULAR CYCLE. How many LOA, recruits, etc in your geography in that year.

(ps as a side note math act scores are nonsensical. my '17 got a 36 on the math act and is barely making it through USNA math alive!!!!!---no subs for him ;)

Pretty close. I don't recall exact numbers, but older was 34 composite; younger was 33 composite. Not so very dissimilar. Also SATs were about dead even. This cycle is very tough- extremely competitive in our state, however. Maybe we should have been quiet about the Academy! I feel like we set off a tide of new interest, in the PA swim community especially! I should learn to keep my mouth zipped. :)
