Still Stuck in the Dark

My question is if you are the only ROTC nomination from a school and are fully qualified is that an automatic in? What really is the difference if he graduates ROTC from a college ? He has just finished the paper work to apply for that

I'm not sure of the context of your first question but I'm assuming it's referring to a ROTC nomination to the Academy... in which case I can't answer that one.

As for your second question as to the difference if he commissions via ROTC, the answer (IMHO) is none. They don't care where you come from, they care what you do. That being said, I have been in heated discussions on these forums before over the relative merits of commissioning via the Academy vs ROTC. I'm sure most Academy grads would say the Academy creates a better soldier/officer for many reasons. Others would say it ain't necessarily so. There have also been discussions as to whether or not being part of the "Academy network" helps your career and still others would disagree with that. IMHO, all other things being equal, being an Academy grad would probably give one an edge during their career. Point is... I don't want to restart that debate yet again, and you should probably take my opinion with a grain of salt... .but a 2LT is a 2LT no matter how you got there, especially if the only route open to you is ROTC.

Thanks you just restated what he has heard from ROTC at school. They are willing to nominate him but also told him we are so glad you are staying here for another year. Apparantly he makes PT fun and is a motivator there but my son loves to workout. He just received an award for getting the attendance up .

Nick,
Thanks for the support
I am not wanting to sound like my poor kid nonsense this was his second try. He did what he was told he needed to do and then some. That is why he really wants a personal meeting with admissions. He told me he does want to apply again and yes he will ask for ROTC nomination as well . He just feels like a personal meeting might give him more details . I do have a cousin who volunters as a liason in Texas looked at my sons stats and does not get it at all as his score is very high. Then again I live in a very highly compettive district where we have combined two congress people into one. Much harder.

Your son can have a personal meeting with admissions. He could have had one anytime in the admissions process by simply going on a candidate visit. At the end of the day an admissions officer is available to review any cadet's file.
Your son should have applied for a ROTC nomination - if for no other reason than all candiates should apply for every nomination for which they are eligible.
The fact is there are only 20 slots available for ROTC nominations - hard to say if it would have made a difference.

Your son won't be the first and won't be the last to apply three times. At 20 he will be more mature and more committed than 18 year olds.
Technically there isn't a difference between commissioning from West Point and ROTC but there are intangibles. One of those is the deep immersion into the Army at West Point as well as many academic and military opportunities available.
He will be guaranteed active duty and may have a better chance of the career of his choice.

so having still not heard anything and awaiting a call back from my admissions officer, does anyone know what could be happening? Rejection letter lost in translation? Some new waiting list or an even smaller remaining group of people on the NWL?

my dd's acceptance package was lost in the mail. luckily we got a call from our congressman who gave us a heads up. thank goodness for that call.

Your right about the guaranteed Active Duty but if you look at the breakdown of branching at the Academy the percentages are too far off from ROTC, Aviation did however have a higher percentage.

Bottom line - call the Regional Admissions Officer and ask him for your status. Of course the class is probaly 99+% filled. However, there are always a few admissions given in the second half of May.

Nick,
Thanks so much !!! I really feel like we were not on top of things these past two applications as my husband sons dad died suddenly right next to him from a medical error. As with anything time has healed and it seems since this winter we are all adjusted so this time around will be much more like it would of been the first time around.

Daughter received a very nicely worded email last Friday, telling her the class was oversubscribed and that no more appointment offers would be made for the class of 2016 but praising her for making it until the bitter end .... onward .....

^^^^^
The class size is over the intended target by a couple dozen and therefore would be very surprised if the number of pulled appointments would drop the class below 1150.

And that leads into a word of caution to those of you with an appointment to the Class of 2016.

If I had an appointment in hand from WP and knowing that WP targeted the 2016 class size to be 1150, I would avoid the following like the plague:
- bad grades from this final semester (WP will request your last semester transcript)
- legal problems (including those that pop up on your police record check)
- medical issues that arise (be careful and don't do anything stupid that could possibly cause you bodily harm).

Time for bubble wrap!

I have the same information as buff81 about the class size. DO NOT GIVE WP ANY REASON TO REVOLK YOUR APPOINTMENT!! I do not think they would be too severe but any negative information could be doom. No bad grades - no police trouble - no severe injuries - no DUI or speeding tickets- no pranks that could go wrong - no "over the top' high school Senior celebrations, etc.

.
My question is if you are the only ROTC nomination from a school and are fully qualified is that an automatic in?

No. What we could consider automatic in, if fully qualified, are children of Medal of Honor Winner, Killed in Action, and 100% service related disability.

The next level will be Active duty or RC soldiers, there are 85 and 85 appointments for AC / RC soldiers respectively. Historically, don't get filled.

ROTC and JROTC can have up to 20 appointments, but I am reasonably sure there are more than 20 ROTC or JROTC students that get nominated.

Thanks for the answer . I really think he can have a better idea after we meet with an admission rep. I think what he really missed out on was he was not a team captain fro any sport he switched from soccer to footbal after his dad passed as his dad was the soccer coach JV and my son was V but still he could not handle it senior year.

they wouldn't not send a rejection letter would they? Just some closure at this point would be nice.

Yes - you should a letter from WP if not admitted.
I think a call to your RC is warranted since it is mid May and you have not heard anything. Very unusual.

I know someone who has not heard a word yet either, last time he spoke to someone he was told that he was # 11 on the waiting list and to sit tight, that was about 3 weeks ago.
