Still waiting on a LOA or Rejection

What should I expect having not heard any decision from the USAFA? Do most people who here after March get rejected? Do they send rejection letters out after making decisions on all Appointees?

My roommate and I were in the exact same boat last year. We hadn't heard anything from USAFA and then on April 7th we both got rejection letters. A month later, around May 12th, I got my appointment and my roommate got an appointment the week after on May 20th. No matter what happens its not the end of the world, there's always different prep schools, falcon foundation, etc.

wow, congrats! If you don't mind me asking, what were your SAT scores? Why do you think initally you and your roommate were rejected? My daughter is still waiting to hear something but my fear is her SAT scores are the hold back.

I think the AFA has finished what they call their "Regular Selection" process, meaning they've filled up the 530ish slots designated for Senator/Congressional Nominations. Now, everyone else is in the National Pool and this makes it a lot harder on the Academy to pick and choose who gets an appointment. I believe that there are still a lot of slots to be filled, but the silence is concerning. I haven't heard of any TWEs yet, and don't think that they'll start doing those until late this month maybe early May. It would be great if candidates didn't have to make a pressing decision a couple of days before the due date of April 15th. But, only time will tell, so keep your chin up! We still have a week before then. I'm in the waiting game with you, and I continue to compulsively check my portal and this forum haha. Sometimes bad habits die hard.

My DD is waiting on an acceptance letter to her beloved AFA. She spent a week there last summer and came home more sure that was the place for her. She received her appointment from Senator Rob Portman and Congressman Steve Chabot. She was medical DQ but they have accepted her waiver. Her status says candidate, no letters no emails as of today.

She received her 4yr ROTC scholarship to Purdue her plan B, Purdue has given her some scholarship money as well. She does not even want to discuss Purdue she did accept her spot there, let’s just say not very willingly.

The waiting is pure torture for all family members!!

She has two friends that have been accepted both athlete's and one person she knows received rejection letter last Monday.

Wondering how the appointment followed the twe? Did they have an explanation? Or was it for the prep school?

Just for clarification on terminology, there is no chance of any candidate getting an LOA at this point. LOAs are used on highly sought-after candidates and are normally given very early in the process, up to the end of the nomination timeframe. For the record, in Academy terminology LOA stands for Letter of Assurance and guarantees an appointment as long as a nomination is received and the candidate is qualified.

If you accept a ROTC scholarship and are accepted to the USAFA afterward, how does that work?

Every year is a bit different on timing. Last year, my DS with the MOC nomination found out in late December or early January. This year I attended my MOC Academy Days last week and they still had some who had not heard with the nominations. The wait is the hardest part. The good news is that if you have a nomination and haven't received a TWE then there is a chance of an appointment for you.

Well mostly. DS got an LOA last week (with no nomination) and an appointment today. He must have a decision by the 14th. I would imagine that there will be some churn after the 14th as candidates with offers have to reply by that date. We are undecided, because he went from NO WORD OF ANY KIND FOR THE LAST FOUR MONTHS to 3 offers of appointment this week. And he can only accept one. (Not bragging...just thanking the good Lord for this opportunity.) So everyone hang in there - openings will happen.

ROTC scholarship is at the bottom of your AFA application so they know you have applied to the academy. Maybe they pass it down to the next in line for it like other scholarships do.

You accept your appointment and call the school and ROTC and tell them you aren't coming. It happens all the time, so not as odd as it seems. My general advice would always be to keep Plan A and Plan B in motion. Everyone appreciates that when Plan A comes through, you change your mind. Someone else will be grateful for that ROTC scholarship -

ROTC scholarships are officially done. The boards have met and awarded all scholarships for FY17. To the best of my knowledge there has never been a waitlist or an upgrade list.
~ IE awarded a type 7 and they come back in May and upgrade to a type 2 because a recipient was appointed to USAFA, freeing up money.

Just like apptmts at USAFA, HQ AFROTC expects that not everyone will activate their scholarship in the fall.
~ USAFA offers around 1350 expecting @ 1100 for I Day.
~~ AFROTC offers around 900 scholarships, knowing that many SA candidates will apply for ROTC scholarships as Plan B.

In essence, there is a limited amount of money in the pot. Come Sept. when they activate the scholarships they will release those funds if they did not meet the numbers...upgrade from a 3 yr to a 3.5 yr. However, if they exceeded the number because more activated the scholarship than they planned they will not hold an ICSP.
~ This occurred back in 09(?) USAFA for yrs offered @1650 apptmts for a class size of 1350. That yr USAFA offered only offered @1350 for a class size of 1100. That meant more scholarships being activated.

You do not need to contact anyone. The minute you take the oath on I DAY that scholarship is revoked. It would be beneficial to contact the admissions office and the ROTC det due to a different aspect.
~ Every year posters may break a bone or get sick a few weeks out and become a medical turnback for USAFA. Contacting the university to tell them that you are going USAFA, but at the same time ask if something happens can they still hold your spot is worth it impo.
~ IE you break your arm during senior beach week after your graduation in late May = you knowing you will be turned back medically before the 1st of June due to being in a cast until July after I Day. Some colleges will say No Problem, pay the deposit and we will hold your spot until X date.
~~ VT (an SMC) traditionally pulls less than 0.01% They have had multiple years of 0 waitlisters offered admission in the summer. Why? Because just like USAFA and AFROTC scholarships the fact is they offer more admissions to matriculate than the expected class size.

Just saying that in this day and age, many colleges expect kids to hit the will not matriculate box when they send the CONGRATS letter.
~ For HS seniors it is not uncommon to now apply to 6, 9+ or more colleges due to common ap.

My DS emailed his admissions counselor and she left a VM yesterday (I think it's a "you did not make it" VM) but she said that we would know by the end of next week if we did not make it in. DS is hoping against all hope for a prep appt. he was bounced out of USNA at 10:00 last night! He does NOT have a nomination but he does have a recommendation to the prep school from our MOC.

Initially when he received this recommendation from our MOC this same person had no idea what it was, but by the VM yesterday it was like everyone received this and it did not count for anything so needless to say we are despondent today and glad Plan B is also wonderful.

Every applicant is considered for PS, but I do not think everyone gets recommendation for PS from MOC. My DS letter from his congressman specifically says nomination for academy appointment. I would think that specific recommendation for PS from MOC makes chanses higher , if DS/DD is qualified for PS. Good luck to you.
