Still Waiting

Received an LOA about a month ago. Still waiting for medical clearance. No developments from DoDMERB.
My son is in that position too. Did you get an intial DQ from DODMERB or just haven't heard from them?

I wanted to advise those of you still waiting to check your portals. I just checked mine and was wonderfully delighted to see the message “congratulations! As of the 26th day of February 2019, an appointment is extended to you to attend the United States Merchant Marine Academy.” Hang in there everyone, the wait will soon be over!

Is there a difference between a Principle Candidate Appointment and just a normal appointment?

I have a DQ for a history of asthma. So from what I understand it's completely up to USMMA(their waiver authority).
That's right. Hopefully they will pursue a waiver for you and request additional medical tests or information. That's where we are now.

An appointment is an appointment once you have one. Congratulations!

DS is a sponsored prep at MMI waiting for an appointment.. Last year he was on "Hold" until early June and then offered a spot at MMI. You would think we would be used to the waiting from last year but nope :) It looks like USMMA prep students at MMI don't get their appointments until mid to late April normally. He got a nomination AGAIN as well as his DODMeRB PHQ and CFA etc. According to his admissions advisor, they have everything they need - now we wait.. and wait some more!

@KP_KRegister, you'd think they'd be the FIRST to receive their appointments! Or at least an LOA...

Yes, that would be nice

I've been on hold since Nov. I'm a 3 Q candidate with multiple nominations to KP. The NHL is definitely a hard place to be, but it's better than the alternative.

I know what you mean. DS is also on HOLD NWL and a multi sports recruit that was recruited for football/Lacrosse/academics and accepted at 21 other DIV II and III and NAIA schools. Some are great engineering schools. He was also recruited by DIV I Yale, Princeton, Cornell, and University of Pennsylvania, and Williams College (not Ivy ), but upon visiting just didn't feel Ivy League was for him. All the other colleges want a decision from him. We have until May 1st for the DIV III. All giving merit scholarships (DIV III) and combination merit/sports at the others, but DS dream from the start was USMMA. When he visited it sealed the deal. He loved everything and is looking forward to the Regimental System and the combination of classroom and hands on training including sea year. He has a passion about serving his country. DS is 3Q with three nominations. Passed the medical/Vision quickly without issue. Has 20/10 vision. DS attends a highly competetive college prep high school. CUM GPA of 3.7 on a 7 point scale (would be higher if 10 point) current quarter GPA 4.2, high honors every quarter, varsity sports, captain, works part time, lots of volunteer work and leadership. This semester he is doing a majo service project. DS is most interested in Engineering, but also talks about wanting to become a Navy or AF pilot. Staff writer on his school's award winning magazine. Was recently representing his high school at University of Chicago International Model Student United Nations. AP classes in Physics, Psychology, and American History/European History. A's in all his science classes like Chemistry, Physics, Biology. Currently, A in his Calculus class. I know his accomplishments are the same or better for all the USMMA candidates. He has narrowed down is plan B on the other colleges. Academics are more important to him than sports in making his decision. As you said the waiting is killing me more than him. His portal did show HOLD, but is now blank for the past week. We keep praying.

That is an impressive resume! Hope you hear something soon!

Thanks, but I know for the SAs all the candidates have very impressive resumes. I see some stating GPAs of 4.3 and ACTs of 34/35. The best of the best. I know USMMA says they aer looking at the complete profile and there are rules around slates for each state with some states being more competetive than others. Waiting/waiting.

Also waiting for my DS. He is currently on Hold. Thankfully his sport season just started so he is distracted from the portal.

Do y'all think I should schedule an overnight stay for my DS even though he doesn't have any word on an appointment yet? There is so much going on during their senior year so time off is a precious commodity.

How far from the Academy are you? The kids have to be there at 10:15 in the morning for a visit. They finish about noon on the second day. My son only had to miss 2 days of school but we're not too far away. I will say the overnight visit confirmed for him that KP was his #1.

Speaking as an old guy. . .not sure that it is really necessary. When I went, I came from California, so my very first experience with the place came on the first day of Indoctrination. . . .
