An amazing gent.
I had the "honor?" of giving him a briefing (5 minutes of fame)...well, I was one of about a dozen "junior officers" giving him probably one of his daily 50 or so at MacDill.
He was "gruff, short (in speech, not height), had this snarly look..." and just scared the hel* outta this young Captain. His questions were short, to the point, and deadly accurate.
Afterwards...he came up and shook hands and paused for pictures. He looked me square in the eyes and said (words to this effect, it's been 20+ years)
"...ah, Captain, you did FINE!!! I just put on the face for the PA types...gimme your CO's name, I'll send a nice note."
And you know...he did!! And I have a VERY NICE bullet in an OPR from that note.
