I'm trying to figure out what major ill be doing at KP. While I'm leaning towards Deck, I personally don't know the difference/benefits from doing one or the other. If anyone that is more knowledgeable on this subject id love some insight/recommendations!

Thank you

One is above the deck.. You tell the ship where to go...The other below. You fix the ship...You will have intro classes to them to help you decide.

I think i was misunderstood I meant the difference between the two Deck majors.. sorry for the confusion

Similar answer ... go with an open mind, get exposed to both, talk to some upperclass in each and then decide. Most of what you will learn in the Log/Sec will be picked up in a few years in the industry anyway so when you really get down to it, its not a lot more than a resume bullet.

Even if you aren't in the program officially, you can always try and get into the Log/Sec classes as an elective. When I started they didn't have the S/Y Management degree but I was able to take a couple of the classes as an elective. The only thing I missed out on were the words ShipYard Management on my degree which very few people would have really cared about anyway.

I'm not trying to disuade you, just realize what you are/are not getting.

Thank you so much for the matter of fact assessment! Ive been told before that if you want to go AD its better to do straight deck. Is that true? I'm still very up in the air about the AD vs Sailing decision but id rather the info now.

I would compare the curriculum for each major and decide what interests you more. The classes at KP are challenging and you will do better if you are in a class you actually have an intetest in. You can find the required classes listed by major and A vs B split on the KP website. Look under Academics, Registrar, Curriculum 2020 and After. You will be asked before Indoc to choose deck or engine. First trimester you will learn a lot about the different majors and you will declare your major after that.

I think some people will say that because most people think going straight deck is the easiest path to the best GPA. I disagree, the easiest path to the best GPA is to pick the major you enjoy the most.

Also keep in mind that AD accessions is a moving target. What they are looking for will be different next year than it was this year and will be different still the year after that ... wash, rinse repeat. The numbers will be different, the communities targeted will be different and the gene pool you are competing against will be different. My advice would be to not over analyze it, enjoy your KP time as much as you can and study the thing that you would be interested in the most if AD isn't an option and let the chips fall where they may.

Don't expect clarity on career decisions at this point. I knew plenty of people who went in to KP planning for AD but ended up sailing and some people who planned on sailing and ended up AD. You just never know at this point.

Exactly. I was told when I entered, that my SAT math scores were too low for me to be successful as an engineer; but the Deck department just didn't interest me. And trust me, now that I am pushing 60, what I thought my life would be at 19 years old is far, far different from anything I expected. Do what interests you and it makes the whole experience much, much better. Maybe not easier, but certainly smoother, or less rocky. . . .

First, go engine, deck is boring. If you go deck, start off with Logistics and Security. You get a VSO/CSO endorsement that the straight deck doesnt get and you learn a little more (just a little) about logistics. If you dont want it you can drop down whenever you want.

Also, its the delano food that makes you ill, not the majors. Try I'll or expect to be marked off in English class.

Hahahaha... my grammar isn't my forte. On my overnight I had the food at Delano, I ate things that you can't really mess up like a sandwich and stuff is the Delano food that bad?

Not sure what it is like now, but there were certainly some questionable items way back in the day. . . .

Yes, delano sucks. The only things that we like are chicken nugget mondays, taco tuesday, and grilled chicken fridays. The dinners are almost always garbage. The weekend food is the worst though. Cold cut lunch is the worst. Ship food is a lot better, gourmet stuff compared to delano.

Not everyone agrees with the above even though it's traditionally very common to criticize Delano food. Many mids actually like the food there. If you do not like the main dish, there are always alternatives like a pretty decent salad bar. Once again it call comes down to your attitude. You can complain or you can be grateful for free food that you don't have to prepare or clean up after.

Hahahahaha!!!!!! With all due respect, you did not eat there every meal, every day, for years. In 4 years at KP, and 20 years around grads in the industry I never met anyone who said they like the food there. I know MMA19kid can be a little bit negative sometimes, but when he's right, he's right.

I think I figured out why the food is not the best....maybe Mitch has a contract like those Alabama sheriffs and he gets to keep any excess money not used to feed the “prisoners”!

Soup and Salad bar were the best part of Delano Food.

Go with logistics and security. It’s not much more than straight deck, and you can always drop down to straight deck if logistics and security is too much for you. Not many people start off as straight deck. - KP 2021 MIDN
