I know I've been asking tons of questions, please bear with me! I can't tell you how much I appreciate your help!

My friend and I who attend the same HS are both applying to SA's, will it be difficult for us to both secure nominations to the same academy (we're still juniors now) ?

(btw don't worry, we don't both want to go to SA's "because our friend is going", we actually became friends through having this among other things in common)

FWIW, my son and one his HS friends both just received nominations to WP (and it's a small high school). My son got a nomination from our senator and his friend got a Presidential nomination.

If one of you gets a LOA all you need is a nom not the principle nom so that may help.
Respectfully,
usnahopeful

Many schools have more than one cadet in a class year at a SA. The noms can be MOC (Rep or Senator) / Presidential / VP / etc. Perhaps one has a LOA etc... Lots of ways this can work so don't worry about it. Present your best foot forward and go with it. Also - in many areas (ours included) some students in the high school are in one Congressional District and other students in the same HS live in a neighboring Congressional District. Just do your best. My D has a classmate at AFA that was her classmate in HS. Happens more often they you might think.

My high school has approximately 1,300 students.

This school year 2 have received appointments to USMA (including me) and 1 has received an appointment to USNA. I wouldn't say its common but it is possible.

i'm also worried about the "slots available" that my MOC may have at each academy because at my HS 2 yrs ago, a boy was appointed to USNA and a girl was appointed to USAFA; last yr a boy to West Point and a girl to USAFA. and this is from a school with a class size of just under 100 per grade!

so i know fretting does nothing, but if anyone has some more insight to the nomination process it would be much appreciated as it confuses me :)

How many people from your schools previous years plays no effect in your chances the next year. These people you mentioned were appointed to diferent academies. Don't worry!

The only slot you need to care about is the one the MOC has available right now. If you have a nom from an MOC, the SA will fill that MOC vacancy. Thus, what happened ly or the yr b4 has no bearance on your sit. The SA awards the appt by the highest WCS. If you have it, you win, they do not say we have too many kids from this hs so take the next highest WCS...it is strictly a point value decision.

You should be happy that for anecdotal evidence your school is putting out high caliber students and it shows that kids from such a small school make it in. Realize the SA's also look at the curiculumn of the school to see how challenging it is. The school might be small, and lets say you rank top 12%, but if 25% of the grads go to Ivies, 25% go to very selective schools (Brown, Tufts, Notre Dame) 25% go to (Umich, UVA, UNCCH) and 25% go to 4 yr with nobody going to trade or 2 yr, then the SA's look more highly on that than the big school where you rank top 10%, and 10% go to Ivy, 50% go to 4 yr, 20% go to 2 yr, 10% go to trade, 10% straight into the work force. That was told directly to me by the Regional ly...the gc rec includes things like the % of where the kids go after grad.

Another school in our district got at least 3 (maybe 4) nominees this year, and it's not an overly well established school. It's the youngest in the district, and from what I know of the student body, there is a large portion that will not be going to selective schools.

So, the school is pretty much irrelevant. It's all on you and your buddy.

Best of luck to the both of you!
Geoff

thanks, both my alo and bgo said they know how competive my school is...about 30% to Ivy league, 40% to other major universites, and 100% to 4 year college or university. (there are only about 100 students per grade, and 35% tend to have a 3.75 GPA or higher while another 20% have a 3.5 or higher) plus everyone has ECs

My son and a girl in his senior class this year both got LOAs in early Oct. for the Class of 2013. They have both gotten their nominations now too. We are in Texas with a senior class size of around 450 students.

Similar story from our high school in VA. Son received his LOA to AFA and one of his best friends received LOA to West Point in mid-Oct. Both now have received appointments. They will be the first from our HS (school just opened in 2003).
Another boy from their scout troop (neighboring HS) is also applying to USNA and we're all hoping he receives an appt there as well. Scoutmaster is, needless to say, elated and very proud of all three. Parent support network has also been super as we're all going through this for the first time and together.
Your school sounds like it has an outstanding track record and reputation which all colleges will surely notice. I wish you the best.

Just a note on competitive schools. You DO NOT have to come from a successful school to get a nomination (although, I'm sure it does help immensely in getting a nomination and ultimately an appointment). My school probably has less than 10% of students that go onto further education (Our valedictorian last year went to University of Colorado... Not what you would expect for a valedictorian). But I managed to conjure up a nomination this year. So personal achievement is probably more important, but I'm sure having a school that has a legacy for successful cadets/plebes helps much also.

as Semper stated, it does not depend on your school or even ranking. My school has an average ranking, but I am not ranked to high in our class. Even with that, I received a nomination from a senator based on the whole person concept (I am very active in my life). Do not worry if you don't think you will get in, because people are usually hard on themselves and do not see how great they are.

also, along with the same HS thing, another student and myself are both applying for the AFA, and my ALO was saying that it shouldn't affect our potential.
