Study Abroad with AROTC

Update on study abroad...
DS just met with PMS and other cadre who were very supportive of him studying overseas next semester. The MSIII instructor advised DS to do the study abroad in the Fall of his junior year as the units like to use the Spring of their junior year to prepare cadets for CLC. My understanding is that this is a two part process that should be undertaken at the same time. The application to study abroad for CC is due March 1 , then one needs to coordinate with their school. Also this is not language based. DS is a business/accounting/finance major so do not think this is limited to language majors/minors. I would encourage anybody who interested to contact their cadre ASAP to take advantage of this amazing oppurtunity.

Sounds like he is on his way.

Just a question, how does it work for payment of the Study Abroad. When my son looked into it the ROTC HRA told him that if the Study Abroad was a required part of his major then the Army would pay up to the value of the scholarship. If the Study Abroad was not a part of his major then he was responsible for the cost. Granted this was 2008 when he asked so a lot could have changed by now.

According to DS AROTC pays for the schooling as if he were here in the U.S. since the study abroad is in conjunction with his current school and degree. DS still gets his stipend and book money. Depending on the country AROTC may also pay for the flight as well but I am not certain of the details on that part. I will keep posting on this as I get further info.

Very nice.

Thanks for the info.

DS, contracted MSII AROTC cadet, arrived 4 days ago at the Lithuania Military Academy for spring semester. Military to military exchange; they sent a cadet to VMI. Living at their Academy, taking IR classes at major university nearby. They are taking good care of him. No additional school costs, good support from cadre. Army did say they would cover airfare but that fell through. Will be an exciting five months.

Excellent thread! Shared with DS. I think he knew some of this but I always find that the Army offers some great experiences that many miss.

Do military ID cards allow anyone in ROTC who study abroad to go shopping at commissaries/PX/facilities/Garmisch hotel/etc in the EUCOM area?

Very Cool. And a very interesting time to be there with Russia breathing down their neck.

I would be careful with this. Remember unlike SA attendees, ROTC cadets are not members of the military even though you may be issued a military ID, I think this is more for CULP, CIET and CLC etc. If you're on a study abroad semester, even though you may be a contracted cadet and the Army is paying tuition and fees, you're participating with a foreign university as a student not as a cadet. If you have military ID as an ROTC cadet I wouldn't try to skip the security line, or get a break on bag charges unless you're traveling for CULP, CLC, CIET etc. I think the phrase "don't be that guy" comes to mind. Interesting side note (maybe not) due to sanctions with Russia, they are no longer allowing ROTC cadets to study abroad (according to DS).

Echo this for UNG's cadets studying at the Republic of China Military Academy this semester. It's a direct exchange, meaning all fees are the same as they would be at the home school (tuition, room and board) and are paid by scholarship or student loans or however you normally cover that. Project GO scholarships covered most of the travel and other related expenses.

Interesting announcement from UNG's commandant yesterday: "10 students from the People’s Republic of China [are living in UNG's] barracks from 29 January-13 February. They are cadets in their country; they wear civilian clothes in USA, however." Now THAT'S a whole different ball of wax!

DS did throw out St Petersberg, Russia as a possible location for the study abroad... I'm honestly not loving that idea. Brussels and Prague are also on the radar.

Sheriff: DS studied in St. Petersburg second semester last year and loved it! He had no problems, and made some great friends. I believe the embargo on ROTC cadets is from the Russian side and a result of our sanctions. Ironically his CULP assignment last summer was initially Ukraine...he ended up in Romania.

Interesting thoughts above on the use of the ID Card.

My son has the CAC Card from when he went with CULP. When he was issued the card he was told it could be used at all Commissaries/PX/Rec Centers and such on any base. He has always been able to get free bag check with the airlines that do offer, and has always gone through the TSA Pre or Military line at security. When he spent a week visiting his older brother at Ft. Rucker he was able to use all the facilities on base, and purchase from any on base store. Not sure if he would be able to get the benefits with the Military sponsored Hotels, he has never tried. Nobody ever said anything to him that would infer he was "That Guy". If the Commissaries and PX allows him to purchase then there shouldn't be an issue.

DS has used his on bases as well. He and some NROTC buddies also used them for ski ticket discounts on spring break last year in Lake Tahoe. The wife was with them though and she can talk any salesperson out of their first-born child, so it's hard to tell what turned the trick in that case. I say, if they'll let you use it, then use it.

Maybe I should clarify, the only time DS has used his ID in an airport was when he was travelling for CULP. I believe he presents it at a base near school when he needs to make purchases, equipment etc. He's not comfortable using it for personal travel or discounts before commissioning...different strokes.

Ditto with my DS. Add to the list Ski lift tickets and USO's.

He/she would only be "that guy/gal" if there is an accompanying attitude of entitlement or a claim to be anything other that an ROTC cadet/mid.

When ROTC cadets contract they sign an enlistment contract and take an enlisted oath and are assigned to the USAR Control Group (ROTC). Whereas SA cadets are technically on AD, ROTC cadets are in the Reserves. Their ID cards allow them access to PX/Commissary and other facilities. They are definitely allowed to use those facilities and aren't being that guy.
