I'm wondering whether or not studying abroad during my high school career for at least a month would be an intelligent decision and I'm also wondering how the SAs would look at it. Please let me know. Thanks.

Sounds awesome and a great opportunity to expand your résumé. However, will it occur 'prior to' or inside the 'window' of your USNA (and other SAs') applications and will it impact other important activities that are important to USNA and the other SAs? For example, will you miss your sports season? Interrupt some good opportunities for leadership, etc.? If you do this as a sophomore or junior, then the timing is great. As a senior, it may be less interesting. But, in either instance, it should be fun and a great experience!

This is the gold standard for a high schooler:

I assume SA's would look at "study abroad" the same way colleges or anyone else would. Rotary Exchanges are meant to immerse the student in the life of a country and a family. The student actually lives with a family, not in dorm with other Americans. It is often a challenge for an adolescent to be away from friends, family, Mom's cooking, etc, and live within a different set of rules and cultural norms...not unlike attending a Service Academy.

My DS #1 spent his Junior year of high school in Brazil and a gap year before college in Taiwan. In both cases, he lived with families where no English was spoken. They were both Rotary Exchanges.
