Suggestions For New Name For Washington NFL Football Team?

Definitely not that. I watched that game on Monday Night Football when Joe Theisman got his leg broken in a bunch of pieces. Too gruesome even in football. Don't think Joe was ever the same quarterback after that.
He wasn't, he retired.

I saw an interview he made...he was asked about that hit and the film...he said he's never seen the video and doesn't want too.

Joe makes an appearance on DC TV stations often. I ate at one of his restaurants years ago. Good food.

Ahh, thanks. That may be the reason I started watching the USAFA football teams under Fisher Deberry. Dee Dowis was an awesome option quarterback. I loved it when Air Force regularly beat up on Notre Dame. Not so much so against Navy.

who really cares, danny has done everything possible to alienate his fans and now he is liar because he swore for years he would never change the name. And badell is the worst thing to ever happen to the league, he is a pandering liberal who needs to go poste haste.

Here is an e-mail sent to Clarence Page of the Chicago Tribune after an article he published concerning a name change for the Washington Redskins.

Dear Mr. Page: I agree with our Native American population. I am highly insulted by the racially charged name of the Washington Redskins. One might argue that to name a professional football team after Native Americans would exalt them as fine warriors, but nay, nay. We must be careful not to offend, and in the spirit of political correctness and courtesy, we must move forward.

Let’s ditch the Kansas City Chiefs, the Atlanta Braves and the Cleveland Indians. If your shorts are in a wad because of the reference the name Redskins makes to skin color, then we need to get rid of the Cleveland Browns.

The Carolina Panthers obviously were named to keep the memory of militant Blacks from the 60’s alive. Gone. It’s offensive to us white folk.

The New York Yankees offend the Southern population. Do you see a team named for the Confederacy? No! There is no room for any reference to that tragic war that cost this country so many young men’s lives.

I am also offended by the blatant references to the Catholic religion among our sports team names. Totally inappropriate to have the New Orleans Saints, the Los Angeles Angels or the San Diego Padres.

Then there are the team names that glorify criminals who raped and pillaged. We are talking about the horrible Oakland Raiders, the Minnesota Vikings, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Pittsburgh Pirates!

Now, let us address those teams that clearly send the wrong message to our children. The San Diego Chargers promote irresponsible fighting or even spending habits. Wrong message to our children.

The New York Giants and the San Francisco Giants promote obesity, a growing childhood epidemic. Wrong message to our children.

The Cincinnati Reds promote downers/barbiturates. Wrong message to our children.

The Milwaukee Brewers. Well that goes without saying. Wrong message to our children.

So, there you go. We need to support any legislation that comes out to rectify this travesty, because the government will likely become involved with this issue, as they should. Just the kind of thing the do-nothing Congress loves.

As a diehard Oregon State fan, my wife and I, with all of this in mind, suggest it might also make some sense to change the name of the Oregon State women’s athletic teams to something other than “the Beavers (especially when they play Southern California). Do we really want the Trojans sticking it to the Beavers???

I always love your articles and I generally agree with them. As for the Redskins name I would suggest they change the name to the“Foreskins” to better represent their community, paying tribute to the dick heads in Congress.

Rumor mil says red-something, such as red-tails, red-hawks, etc. Redhawks would fit in with the bird theme around here with Ravens, Orioles, etc.

My offering is Washington Swamp Rats.
I'd have thought you would have gone with 'Red Wine'.
I saw a meme today that suggested they keep the name, but go with a red skin potato in the logo.

They just need to get on with it.

I’ve read the reason the former team name is offensive compared to other names associated with Native Americans.

I can see where the Cleveland Indians logo with the goofy image of an Indian would be offensive.

I’m a life long Braves fan and see that as being a positive image but I’m not Native American.

I know for a fact the Seminole tribe has endorsed the Florida State mascot and knowing them, they are probably making a profit from it.

The Kansas City Chiefs? Really? Who wouldn’t want to be associated with a bunch of Chiefs. We are a good and noble People.

The Cincinnati Reds actually changed their name briefly n the early 1950s, to the "Redlegs", so Senator Joe McCarthy et al would not accuse the team of being communists. True. Absurd, but true.

Being a liar in Washington DC has never hindered anyway, historically-speaking.

The "Redlegs" was a nickname, like the "Tribe" of the "South Siders" or "North Siders" or "Redbirds". It came from the original name of the team, the Cincinnati Red Stockings.

How do I know this? I listened on the radio to my Hank Aaron led Atlanta Braves get beaten up by the Redlegs and Redbirds. That's how Milo Hamilton and Ernie Johnson Sr. referred to them.

According to ESPN they actually changed the formal team name to "Redlegs".

"It was in this context that the Cincinnati Reds officially changed their name to Redlegs in April 1953 because they didn't want to be associated with the Red Scare. It’s not that anybody actually thought slugger Ted Kluszewski was a Communist; those were just the times. An Associated Press article from April 9, 1953, reports that Cincinnati general manager Gabe Paul preferred that the team be called the Redlegs, although the article admitted it would be difficult for fans and writers to change their habits. Still, from 1953 to 1959, the team was officially known as the Redlegs."

I stand corrected
