I was reviewing the calendar in the recently posted parents handbook and saw a listing of "Summer Academic Term - 13 Jun-22 Jul". My question is what is this? Is this like a summer term that you can take extra courses, etc? Is this only for improvement of grades if having academic difficulties? Can you simply select to do this?

Yeah, it's pretty much just for people who are struggling academically or are otherwise behind. A common reason it's done is to facilitate a change of major. If there's not a good reason to do it, the expectation is that you go to the fleet, and while Summer School isn't bad, trust me when I say you'd rather be in the fleet!

Here is an example: If you are a STEM major and start in a mathematics course to prepare you for Calculus 1, you will take Calc I in the spring and Calc 2 in the summer. Since you take 2 classes during the summer, you will end up 1 class ahead. In the old days, it would mean an extra elective. Now, it can be a free elective or a semester with a lighter load (providing you are taking 15 credits not including HPE).
