summer assignments for 2014 summer

nuensis,

I may have explained this wrong...........1st block unassigned, 2nd block surface cruise, 3rd block leave.

Does this change your answer at all?

Thank You!

That is unusual. Maybe a talk with the CO/SEL is in order. Generally, he should already know what to do as far as training schedule problems; we've had enough briefs on it.

Training schedules really won't be finalized until May or so; my best guess is that the Training Department is still trying to figure out training opportunities for 3/C. YPs canceled an entire pennant at the last minute last summer, and those released from training didn't know until the first day of the training block. I had a five week surface cruise last summer that cut my leave block short. Stuff happens.

As of right now, if he only has the surface cruise in MIDS, he has two blocks of leave. MIDS will not actually specify "LEAVE" for any particular block; only training is listed. If the block doesn't show up, then nothing is scheduled and it is leave. But to reiterate, things may change quickly, often, and without warning. Make flexible plans.

nuensis,

Thank You for your insight!

Best advice is to remain flexible. My (now) 1/C was assigned sailing for 1st block for 3/C summer training. The boat was damaged by lightning before they started and not reapired in time. She was just given an extra block of leave even though they had a few days (weeks?) notice.

Lots of last minute changes can occur; ships' schedules change, money becomes available or not, etc. Knew of a 3C last year who had 2 blocks of leave and then had 1 block changed to PROTRAMID--with the 2C--at the last minute. DS went up to Groton for a sub cruise only to find out on site that it'd been canceled and then cooled his heals in Bancroft for a week before getting another one in Norfolk. We did lots of last minute flight changes for him--book Southwest if you don't want to pay for the changes.

To OP, his sub cruise was about 10 days out to sea on a fast attack. Length of cruise is ship/schedule dependent.

Wait, what? Doesn't the Navy pay for travel to/from assignments? And they book their own flights?

They don't pay for leave and yet you must vacate the academy?

Hmmmm, well, I guess that happens at "regular" college too...

So my mid, whom I can no longer claim as a dependent, still needs my financial support because he will be booted out of Mother B for a month and will need to travel and live some place during that time. HE certainly doesn't make enough to pay for all these flights every time they are on leave. And quite frankly, neither do we. I guess we better start living on Ramen noodles.

I dont know that you must vacate the premises. You lose your particular room. You can leave him there...

Sorry I wasn't clear about the travel. The Navy pays for (or provides) travel from Annapolis to wherever their training is and back. We ended up changing his flight home because his sub cruise changed both in location and duration.

I believe they need to vacate Bancroft unless they have a training block at the Yard; YPs, powered flight, NASS, STEM, detailer, sailing, etc. Then they get rooms in Bancroft for that length of time.

You can put up a reside in Bancroft chit, the same as any other leave period. Usually just for transients who need a place to stay in between training blocks.

I don't think there's been a midshipman who has stayed in Bancroft for summer leave. Just....why....

...just wondering if it was an option for those who may not have the money to travel home (or wherever). I'd hate to see a homeless midshipman panhandling in the streets of Annapolis during his/her leave.

It's an option. There is always a room if needed. And they are pretty much free to come and go as they want. I don't know anyone who did except for those with loss of leave privileges they received from a punishment in my day. Some will for a day or two as training moves around. That is why good sponsors are amazing!

Pretty sure if he/she panhandles in uniform in DTA lots of tourists will happily buy them some food.

oh dear, sorry. i was focused on the "best and brightest" part...and how cool it looks.
