Summer Commitments?

Hi all,
DS has applied for AROTC and NROTC-MO scholarships. Thinking ahead (with fingers crossed) we were discussing summer requirements because DS was wondering if he could keep his summer job (they would be flexible about the required 4-6 week summer requirements). We are a USNA sponsor family for several Mids over the years and know about their 3 block schedule over the summer with a commitment to 2 blocks but also how things change for them at the last minute.
Are ROTC Award winners at the mercy of their branch all summer or can they plan around the dates of the required summer training?
Thanks in Advance - just wondering with fingers crossed if DS is fortunate to be awarded a scholarship.

NROTC has two or three sessions of NSI at Great Lakes. Each is 3-4 weeks, depending on COVID. I think you can try to request a change if there’s a conflict with the session to which you are assigned. My DS will be going next summer.

If you're asking about long term NROTC-MO MIDN don't usually hear about their training dates until mid to late April.

As I recall, the only summer DS had a job while in college and on scholarship was his rising junior year. He worked as a freshman orientation leader at his college prior to his summer cruise. He had to leave that job a week or two early to attend his summer cruise. He made a request earlier to schedule the cruise for a later date but it didn't work out. I don't think he got his cruise dates antil sometime in June.

I can only speak for AROTC, which is what I went through, and it is what my DD is going through. Each semester, your DS will review their academic progress with their cadet leadership, as well as their cadre. As long as cadets are making progress and performing well academically, they will work with the cadet regarding part-time work and permitting them to request training outside of college classes and other work schedules.

For NROTC Navy option, DS worked all summers. The trick is landing a job that is flexible. DS was an Lifeguard & Ocean Lifeguard. There has been a huge shortage of Lifeguards on many parts of the US, both pool based and ocean, and they schedule flexibly if you have a military commitment.

Below are official Navy and one official university (Princeton University) sites to learn more about NROTC-MO or AROTC summer training offerings - use google or search this site for more details. in short though agree that you can have summer jobs / internships but work with them to work around your summer ROTC commitments - you can also have a part time job during the school year if you excel at time management and work it out with said employer that your priority needs to be your military training. Majority of employers will accommodate - who wants to be known as the employer who doesn't support our military - we are REQUIRED at my job to give preference to military candidates, and flexibility to those with service commitments - not that we need the requirement to do so but just sharing as a data point.

Other than perhaps the week before school starts for orientation, I don't believe AROTC has training the summer before their first semester at school. Navy has NSI as noted above for many but not all scholarship winners this past year, and NSO Orientation at the universities (except SMCs) for up to a week in the week prior to school starting, as well.

Good luck.

NROTC-MO - DS last summer did not get his orders until late April. You are at the mercy of the service and summer training for mids is not a high priority in terms of advanced notice. Good luck.

I worked all four summers. Completely possible, as long as your job is flexible. 90% of the time you will get the summer cruise slot you want which makes it easier!
