I thought I would start a thread as to what the best use of the summer is between high school graduation and starting college in Sept. (Plan B) for those who plan to reapply to USNA for class of 2022. There has been a lot of information on what to do in the first semester of college, taking plebe year courses (Physics, Calculus, Chemistry, English), enrolling in NROTC, getting college professors recommendations, etc. What about the plans for the summer? Is part time job/ sports in a local league the best combination? Volunteering perhaps? What about going abroad for a month or so (too fluffy?) Taking classes at a local community college? I am thinking that those 3 months is valuable time that the academy would consider.

Study ACT/SAT and get those scores up, volunteering, leadership, practice for your CFA. Getting a job over the summer does not look as good as having a job during the school year. Get a job over the summer and keep it. But most important for college re-applicants is get good grades.

DS is hoping for a scholarship to study Arabic at UNG over the summer if he does not receive an appointment. He will be working with a tutor and take the SAT in May. Applications for our Senators open by the end of March so he is planning to start on those as well. I am deeply impressed by his commitment considering that he has a solid Plan B in place. I am not looking forward to another ride on this rollercoaster. He is CPR so there is still hope.

First, take couple weeks of vacation. You deserve it and probably need it.

After that, do something that will improve your chances of being appointed next year, which basically means doing something productive. For many, this means work. USNA understands that candidates about to enter civilian college may NEED to get a job in order to help finance their education. That's perfectly fine and expected.

If you're lucky enough not to need a job, consider what you can do to improve yourself or the lives of others. There's no need to take classes unless you want to b/c anything over the summer will be dwarfed by your first semester. You can volunteer. You can take an intensive language course. You can participate in sports camps.

As a BGO, I ask reapplicants what they did during the summer. I'm looking for them to tell me that (along with vacation) they did something other than hang out and play video games. The reason is that people who are successful at USNA are those who like to keep busy and summers at USNA are jam-packed, while allowing reasonable vacation. Thus, show USNA and your BGO that you can do something useful with your free time.

This is very helpful and what I suspected. USNA will be looking to see what leadership skills were displayed over the summer - since they would want to know how you improved from last year's cycle. Thank you

My DS, who successfully reapplied this year, worked (a lot) to save up spending money for college. He also worked out to prepare for re-taking the CFA and being in good shape when checking into his NROTC unit. It certainly wasn't anything out of the ordinary in terms of summer activities. He did hit the ground hard when 1st semester began.
