My DS, who has a Naval ROTC scholarship, recently changed his major from Tier 1 to Tier 2 which was approved by the Navy. In order to catch up with everybody else in his new major and so that he can finish in 4 years, he needs to take 1-2 classes this summer after his Summer Cruise. Does anybody know if the Navy will pay for these classes, or should we plan to pay out of pocket?

My DD was on a Nurse NROTC scholarship and was able to get summer school approved in 2015.

I expect you'll need to pay out of pocket, but it never hurts to have him ask the cadre.

No direct experience, but 3 of my DS roommates took summer school classes and J term classes and NROTC picked up the tab. Taking the courses were "required" so they could graduated on time.

I almost always agree with Kinnem.
In this case, the Navy allowed him to change majors. 2 summer school classes are cheaper than another semester. It also gets you to the fleet quicker.
I would be surprised if they don't approve it.

It probably depends on the Unit. My DS participated in an engineering abroad summer program that gave him several technical credits. Didn't even consider asking because he chose that option. Another summer he took a required math class at our local juco so that he could fit some of the other rotc requirements like cultural awareness in his schedule. I paid for the juco class. My thought on summer classes, if you can take them and they transfer the credits do it. With an engineering major and rotc classes my ds overloaded with 19 to 21 credit hours each semester....summer classes allowed him to pull back a little senior year...17 and 15 credit hours that year...he was able to focus on senior projects and enjoy more extracurriculars

All, my DS was informed by his commanding officer that the Navy will not pay for his summer school class since he needs to take it due to a change in major. So, we will pay for the class from his 529. When looking at the overall picture, not a big deal, but this is something to keep in mind if you are considering changing your major.

My ds is a STEM student.. 5 yr it will take, on a type 1 afrotc scholarship and they do not pay for his summer classes.

mascara_mom, can you tell me where is your son going to school and his major? I'm interested in learning which programs take 5 years and which receive a 5-year scholarship.

DS is an engineering major at Clemson. It’s normally a 4 year program but with the extra credits required for ROTC he was told by the cadre that they would extend his scholarship for up to 5 years. Alabama told him the same thing when he visited their ROTC unit.

We had to pay out of pocket his freshman year, but we also have the HOPE scholarship in the state of GA which pays 90% of tuition. He was awarded his type 1 starting sophomore year, thus paying for the next 4 years.

He's attending University of Georgia and majoring in Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Aerospace Studies. Due to ROTC classes, it's bumped him into a 5th year. He will be staring his Junior year in Aug.
