Hello,

I am a freshman in ROTC transferring to West Point next year. I would love to go to a school like air assault this summer since I finish my 2nd semester in May and don't attend West Point till July. Has anyone ever heard of someone in my position doing a school in between? Do you have to have the support of your rotc battalion or could I walk on? I am not sure if they would want to use a slot on me if I am transferring.

Thanks,
Go Army

DO NOT RISK THE INJURY. Also, it is not July, it is the end of June. Not that much time.
Play it safe and go in the summer of 2021.

Your ROTC unit won’t give you the slot when they know you’re leaving. You need to use the time to get in the best possible shape you can, and stay healthy.
You are not transferring in the typical sense of the term. You will be a college applicant and if appointed will begin as a Plebe (freshman) and attend for four years. You may be able to take some advanced studies as a result of your prior college studies.
Air Assault will likely be offered to you your second summer, but if past history is any indication, it will not be guaranteed. There are MANY summer opportunities, some required, some competitive.

Your parents and friends may think you are “transferring” and may like to describe what you are doing this way. You are not “transferring.” You are a college re-applicant. You should probably stop describing what you are doing as transferring. It seems dishonest as you must know better. That will not fly at WP.

Bear in mind that MIADs are competitive. They are not required or guaranteed even for WP Cadets. Granted, you’ll likely get one or more by the time you are a Cow. As for this summer, get used to the idea you will be a Plebe, no better or worse that the Prior Enlisted, USMAPS graduates, and Direct Applicants, let alone the very best College Re-Applicants, one of which you will be.

If your concern is that a PIAD will result in your not being able to do a MIAD after Plebe year, this is not the case. You can do both. True for AIADs as well.

Good luck. Focus on fitness and health. Wearing a nice tab as a Plebe will not be worth the risk. Many Plebes go to Air Assault after Plebe year. Do well militarily and you will likely be one of them.

Passing Survival Swimming is a requirement.
You can be a Day 0 Drop after being voluntold to go to AASLT and graduate. Reference the Army's Bus Driver Course graduation rates.

To the OP, just wait. If WP doesnt give you the opportunity you can work your way into a unit where it helps or is a requirement to have it (101st, most Infantry units, etc)
