Summer Seminar 2013!

Of the two SS you attended, which was more physcially demanding and which kept you active (busy with not a lot of down time), in general for more of the time?
Also, did one or the other place more of an emphasis on the admissions process?
Finally, you mentioned getting into 3. Any specific reason you did not apply to USCG's AIM program?

Thanks in advance for the insight.

1. Of the two summer seminars, I would say that the morning PT at the Air Force Academy was more physically demanding (doolie for a day was
awesome!).

2. It was a year ago that I attended the summer seminars, but I remember them both keeping me about equally active. There was not much down time at all during either one.

3. To be honest, at the time when I applied, I was not even aware of the AIM program. Were I to go back in time, I would definitely apply for it! Like I said, go to every academy program possible! Keep an open mind! Like I said before, had I not attended West Point SLS last year, I would not even have filled out a West Point application. Now, I just got a call from my senator this morning saying that my West Point appointment is in the mail! Good luck to everyone here, as most of you will be eagerly awaiting appointments a year from now too!

JUST MY OPINION......

Apply to all of the summer leaderships, see where you get in, chose your favorite-do not go to more than two. Getting into any of the summer leadership programs will not give you extra points and will not be reflective of what a school year will look like. That is what a Candidate visit is for. Having said that, attending one of the summer leadership programs will help you during your interview process and essay writing. When asked a question in an interview it is nice to be able to say something like, “when I went to USXA I was impressed with all of the equipment they had –do you know they have a piece of equipment that cuts through titanium with a stream of water.…” While writing your essay you may be able to reflect on your week there. While there you will also be able to check off your CFA if you attend the summer leadership programs at USMA or USNA. Additionally ~60% of the applicants that my son met when he went to the summer leadership programs decided it was not for them. The other 40% were even more motivated. This is a good way to determine if the path you are on is really indeed what you want. There isn’t a need to go to more than one, however, if you don’t get into your preferred summer leadership program there is still value in going to another. If you really feel the need go to two, However, don’t be counter productive (!!!!!!!) -don’t go to too many (three is overkill in my opinion)!!! If you are gone too much over summer you wont be able to dedicate time to your application-which you want to get as much done over the summer as you can. Additionally you want to devote time over the summer to things that WILL get you "points" on admissions: working on your CFA, Boys/Girls state, volunteering, working, act/sat prep.

accepted for session A

I will be at session A this summer so hit me up if you'll be there too! i'm super excited and can't wait to hear back from west point and usna also.

I'm in as well!

I'm so excited. Still waiting to here from from the USNA for NASS.... Does anyone know if getting into NASS will be harder than the USAFA SS?

To people who got in: what kind of stats did you have? Although I'm looking at USAFA for school, I only applied to WP's SLE. Their selections come in a bit under a week, and I'm just curious.

Maybe it was easier for me to get in because I am a girl, but my stats were 2000 SAT (700 Math, 640 Writing, 660 Reading); I have a 4.0 Unweighted GPA; I'm in the top 10% of my class and we don't rank; I'm a member of various clubs including National Honors Society and have received several leadership awards; I play varsity soccer and run and do yoga

Well I'm number 1 of 44. With 4.0 gpa, I've got student council under my belt I'm the Vice President of National honor society. I've accumalated 200 hours of community service. My school is a mountain veiw christian: leadership institute, where we have mandatory leadership classes. I've received serval leadership awards.Captin of softball team and I do cheer and maintan being a daycare worker and a lifeguard ...so I think the Leadership part of my life I got down packed which help me get in....Also it does hurt to be a smart girl of a minority. But I also have sucky SAT score of only 1600. :/

FWIW start studying for your SAT, and take the ACT.

Conversion would mean your SAT would be 1200. The avg SAT score for cadets is mid 1300+.

I say this because even if you are in rural areas and get a principal next yr from your congressman, when you enter the AFA, profs are going to teach at much higher speed than any AP class you will take in HS. If the avg is higher than you, you will need to play catch up.

Admissions look at the school profile. They will re-weight your cgpa.

I mean this with kindness, but to give yourself a stronger chance spend the next few months taking the SAT and ACT monthly. They will superscore. Also realize that plan B will most likely be AFROTC scholarship.

AFROTC does not superscore, it takes best sitting. Avg Type 1 is also 1300+ 1 sitting, avg Type 7 is @1270. Additionally, your major matters. 80-85% of all scholarships go tech major. Choosing a non-tech major you will need to be in the Type 1 range for SAT.

This is all before the sequestration impact for ROTC.

Take the time to enjoy this moment for SS, but understand that your goal is the AFA, and you must/should at this time keep your eye on that goal.

Your SAT is going to be part of the 60% that the AFA will use for PAR.

Good luck. Smile. Enjoy the happiness.

Stats of DD, in general...
PSATS all in high 60s
10th grade SAT just under 2000. Awaiting 11th grade score. Will take ACT.
No class rank. Attends a residential (boarding) school for gifted students...state funded. All classes Honors and AP (no standard courses offered).
2 Varsity Sports and intrammural sports
Long standing commitment to specific community service
Leadership positions in student arts area at school and in national organization
Summer leadership programs, volunteer work and engineering/research/math at universities

BGO thinks that the school she is in will/has helped the most. Suggests more leadership (ideally team captain) and wanted her to run cross country (did not). Also told: SSs are RECRUITING TOOLS. Fact that kids from her school rarely apply to USAFA helped (likely) get into USAFA SS. Fact that 1-2 kids per year gain USNA appointments will (likely) hurt her chanced of getting into the USNA ss.

Finally: Reminded that there are no guarentees. There are just SO many motivated, bright, hard working kids with good stats.

All of you who are working hard should be proud, regardless of SS application results.

Do you know if the AFA prefers SAT over ACT?

They don't care. They take either, as do all the academies and almost all colleges. Take them both and then continue to repeat whichever one is best for you.

Can someone explain the course schedule? Like how many do you do? I guess, how many hours?

Here is a link to the entire course catalog.

When you say "the course schedule", I am assuming you mean the freshman academic schedule. During the C4C year, cadets normally take 11 classes (5 first semester and 6 per semester for the remaining 7 semesters). Due to a variety of factors (AP credit* and validation of classes) not all C4Cs take the same classes. Cadets begin to follow their major's course list during their C3C year.

*USAFA does not give credit for AP classes, but validating classes opens up options for taking classes outside your major as you progress.

Thank You! This was very helpful, however I was looking for it for Summer Seminar as that is this thread :)

SS Classes

Can someone explain the course schedule? Like how many do you do? I guess, how many hours?

The workshop descriptions list the number of hours (looks like most are 4) and days, I assume, they meet on. But I also did not see information on how many courses you will be doing. Perhaps someone from last year can share?
