Summer Seminar 2014

Thank you everyone! My PSAT scores were not that great because of a bad stomach flu that week. That's pretty much the reason why I am reluctant to submit my scores :(

@prepswimmom Wow! I didn't know that was possible. I honestly thought without my SAT scores, I would be deemed not competitive.. Thank you! I will submit my app asap now.

DD applied for NASS a couple of days after it opened, received an invitation to a CVW the following day, and was accepted to NASS today.

I will be attending the March CVW and received notification of my acceptance for summer seminar today! Exciting day, to say the least :)

Flightsurgeon, Here's a conversation from the Naval Academy's FB page:

Applicant: Excuse me, I'd like to clear doubt about my application. I recently submitted an application for the NASS, but I will retake my SAT in March, how do I update my scores on my record for application?

Admission Officer: you can update your scores by calling our office at 410-293-1858 when you receive them.

If you are uncertain, contact Admissions via fb and ask them.

All the best.

NASS Acceptance

Just got the email after football weightlifting that I was accepted for session 1! CVW in April as well! :shake:

@flightsurgeon my son did not take his first set until March of last year. I think he just said he had not taken yet. Good luck. He loved it!

Does anyone know when the next "batch", if you will, of emails will come out?

Just going to NASS session 1. I submitted ACT scores that weren't that great (25 on the English) and still got in. I put a lot of time into the personal statement and it paid off.

My guess would be the fact that you are from NV paid off more.

My DS applied on 1/22 and has not heard anything. He only listed session one, as he in enrolled in pre-calc at the local community college this summer.
Hopefully that does not count against him.

Typically, Session 1 is the "least popular" b/c many schools are still in session at that time.

What helps most is being from a state/district/school that historically has had no/few applicants/appointees to USNA. That is something over which you have no control.

Just out of curiosity,

For those who got accepted into the summer seminar, how long after you submitted your application did you receive notification of acceptance?

I got my notification yesterday... I think that I turned in my application the day after it was released.

I'm worried that my personal statement wasn't good or long enough, when I submitted (on the first day) I was completely unaware that these were things students were putting a lot of time and effort into... It was only about a paragraph saying that navy is my first choice college and I want to go to summer seminar to make sure of that. Will that ruin my chances of getting in? I'm going to the February CVW -- is there any way I could talk to admissions or make it known that I'm passionate about attending the school considering my bad personal statement?

Your NASS application is just the beginning. You will have a chance to update your statement and make your application strong, by getting good grades in tough classes, through leadership and sports, your BGO interview, and in your MOC application/personal statement. NASS is a marketing tool and depending on where you live may have as much influence on whether you get accepted. USNA wants to get the word out, so to speak, to potential candidates in states that have had less interest/fewer candidates applying.

The CVW is a different experience than NASS. Even if you don't get accepted to NASS, embrace the CVW, ask lots of questions and take advantage of everything. At this point don't worry about your personal statement for NASS. Control the things you can control. Good luck!

The statement is not as important as scores or other accomplishments, and neither of those are nearly as important as location. Great kids get turned down because they are in an area where there is too much interest in USNA, if you are one of those kids you shouldn't worry at all. NASS doesn't have any real bearing on your app unless you get a great report from your squad leader (which even then doesn't do too much), the CVW is an opportunity to see the academy for what it is first hand, something the summer seminar won't quite give you. In the end you really shouldn't be worrying too much about summer seminars, your time now would be better spent preparing for standardized tests that go on the real application :thumb:
