Summer Seminar Acceptance

USAFA Summer Seminar

Daughter received acceptance to USAFA Summer Seminar 2011.
We are excited and proud of daughter.

same i guess we're not that smart :frown:

Don't worry if you haven't been accepted yet. I applied the first day and didn't hear back anything until around March I think. Maybe even later. Yes waiting is hard but believe me, this will be the easy part. :thumb:

I applied in mid-January last year and didn't hear back until late February. Honestly don't freak that it's about your academics... Your admissions officer probably just hasn't gotten to you yet.

They explained it at the Seminar: each AO has about 5-7 states in their region (I may have made up that number, I don't remember for sure, it sounds about right though). I don't know exact numbers on applicants, but I would guess it's a fair amount, which means that it takes a while to sift through. What happens is you're either automatically accepted (killer grades, ECs, and test scores) or you're placed back into the pile to be reviewed after a certain amount of new apps has been received (which doesn't mean you're dumb, btw).

Remember that there are a bunch of ridiculously over-qualified apps sent in; being accepted isn't a guarantee to being ACTUALLY accepted, and being rejected isn't a guarantee to being ACTUALLY rejected/wait-listed.

Good luck and I hope that helps (at least a little). Trust me, waiting for an actual acceptance is MUCH worse!

I guess waiting is inevitable..

I'm aware that most accepted to summer seminar do not have interviews with their admissions officers, but mine has contacted me for one. Does an interview help with admittance in the slightest? Thanks.

Agreed. There are I believe 350 kids attending per session, multiply that by three sessions, that's 1050 accepted applications. I recall the Lt. Col. in charge of SS last year saying they had somewhere around 3500 completed applications to be reviewed. Like jetset said, there are like 5-7 SS admissions officers, so that's between 500 and 700 applications to review PER admissions officer. Also, the Lt. Col. said that the whole admissions process was done entirely by hand. They print the received applications, and as the Lt. Col. put it, sit down at the dinner table with a beer and start reading haha. This takes a long time. I wasn't accepted until the end of February I believe. I was so excited when I read my acceptance e-mail on one bored computer programming class day at school haha.

I didn't have an interview, but it can't hurt right?

SCcandidate, what session/element?

Finally status changed to under consideration. At least that's something.

I remember I was in C session, B squadron, I believe element 10, but I could be wrong on that part

for those accepted already, what were your "killer" standardized test scores, ECs, grades, etc. ?

Just curious so I can give all of the rest of us (who are still waiting) a yardstick to measure ourselves against.

Keep in mind, SS can simply be a recruiting tool- it's not over just bc u didn't get accepted but a friend did.

Academically on sitting carelessly on the following:
ACT comp-31
Math-33
Eng-30
Sci-33
Reading-27

ranked 8/255, 3.84/4.7

and still waiting...

You're going to start seeing more summer seminar acceptances in short order, soon. The AFA folks are back at work, and they're holding boards almost daily. There are a LOT of applicants to go through, and the AFA is asking ALO's to comment on their candidates so expect some delays while that process occurs.

But it's going to ramp up pretty quickly.
