the portal won't let me send mine in...it says i'm already in the candidate system? whah? grr..

my computer wont let me open up the application instructions for NASS. can someone tell me what they are? Thanks
steph and scuby, I'm not really sure what's going on there, but I can tell you from our experience the portal responds better to IE then it does to FF or other web browsers. Try Internet Explorer. Then try calling the Admin Office for assistance. They are keen to take calls from interested students

Uh-oh. . .in my rush of enthusiasm to fill out the app, I used Chrome without peeking at that first
Will that mess up my application/damage my chances? I know, might be stupid question, but is it just a "compatibility issue"?

so I am definately applying when I get home. So why do they not show government or biology on the classes cuz i took AP for both. we dont have honors classes at my school just advanced so it looks like i took easy classes when i didn't and other classes early. Should i be worried or no? I was invited to go visit their as a drag this past fall, and i went so when i went there i was told i probably wouldnt get into summer seminar cuz they would have already evaluated me. I'm just getting sooo nervous, its like my dream school.

Haha I've been away from about an year, last night after filling out the NASS app I figured I'd come back.
By the way, I've heard this from a current mid a while ago and have been curious.
Is your 'performance' during seminar a factor considered for admission?
A mid told me this two years ago when I was down at the academy for STEM and I've been curious.

By the way, I've heard this from a current mid a while ago and have been curious.

A mid told me this two years ago when I was down at the academy for STEM and I've been curious.
I went there also as a drag and they said I shouldn't be worried if I don't get into Summer Seminar cuz they were evaluating me there (even if I didn't know it. lol). So I would assume that Summer Seminar is also somewhat of an evaluation process.
Use common sense, good manners, respect, etc, and you have nothing to worry about. Act out, and you probably will have a problem, and it may be insurmountable. I have had a couple of candidates who stalled out early in the cycle, and when I checked the RD told me to forget about them: they copped 'tudes with the NASS cadre. Word to the wise: work with the cadre and be receptive to what they are trying to teach you rather than talking over them. It goes a long way.

The simple answer is yes it can. The unknown part is just how much. You will be evaluated by your Summer Seminar Cadre who are newly minted 3C Midshipman. Some of these Mids will take their roles very seriously and go the extra mile to write very detailed evaluations, both good and bad.. Some will do the absolute minimum. You will have no idea what was written about you and what effect it has on the admissions board.
My Mid told me the following about how she handled her evaluations: For the average kid, it took about 30 minutes to fill out the 1 page form. For the "####bags" she took about an hour to detail why they were unsuited for the Academy. To her knowledge none of the kids that she gave a very negative evaluation made it into the Academy. For the outstanding kids she took about 2 hours to write 2-3 pages of details as why they were outstanding. Of the 5 kids she did this for she has seen 4 of them make it into the Academy.
She also wrote a very unusual recommendation... The kid was young, just made the age requirement for NASS. Kid was outstanding and could make a great Midshipman but she felt the kid seriously lacked maturity. She truly felt that if the kid came directly into the Academy, it would" rip him apart emotionally" and he would wash out. She spent 3 hours writing up a 3 page very positive evaluation but recommending NAPS and not direct entry to the Academy. Fast forward 2 years to plebe summer 2010. This same kid, now a plebe, comes up to my 1C Mid and thanks her for the evaluation she wrote. Come to find out, that evaluation and recommendation letter was the determining factor for this kid to get accepted into Foundation school over several other candidates. This is an exception not the rule but it shows there are exceptions to standard wisdom.
The bottom line here is NASS is an opportunity for you to showcase your talents and desire to be successful at the Naval Academy. You are in competiton with every other Kid at NASS as well as the thousands who apply but do not attend NASS. Like any competition do your best, be positive, and bust your ass to prove you want to be there. The rest of it is beyond your control.

I just applied to NASS, but even if I get accepted I might not be able to go as my school doesn't get out till the end of June and I am already attending the USAFASS. Oh well hope it all works out
I applied to NASS as well earlier in the day, but I might have the same problem as you. My school also gets out at the end of June. I hope it works out for the both of us

Here's a little advice. Do your best, stay motivated all the time, and be the most competitive you can be.
But also, dont be "that guy."
You're going to be in classes where the professor will teach some basic derivation of the pythagorean theorum; don't be the one that's taking AP Calc BC and is shouting out on the edge of his seat blurting what to do next. There will be kids that know more than you.
You're also going to be ahead of the game when it comes to physical activity. Yes, it looks good to finish first in the CFA/PFT, but its ten times better and more respectable to go back and encourage the ones that are struggling through the warmup.
If you're from JROTC, knowing the cadences and how to perform an "about face" is excellent, but don't try to be a knowitall. Everyone learns the drill and marching dynamics within 15 minutes.
Don't take yourself too seriously either. Have fun. It's a summer program with USNA, of course you'll have fun. It's not plebe summer yet. I've made good friends with the people who were in Alpha 4-3 Session 1, and still maintain conversations with them, although they did not with to go to USNA after NASS.
In my squad, I've had the arrogant genius, the super jock, and the JROTC knowitall, and then everyone else including me. I could probably say that out of everyone in my squad, I and another "average joe" earned LOAs and recieved appointments. Can't speak for the others.
Not saying anyone on this forum would break courtesy and be tools. Its just that having fun while being respectful seems to pay off.

Just got word on the FB page that BGO's were sent a notification that they will start reviewing NASS apps tomorrow and will send out applications weekly from now through the beginning of April. So, sounds like it is somewhat on a rolling basis, since the app deadline is not until April.
