I have reached the end of my summer seminar app and there is a check box that asks: In addition to Summer Seminar, please use this submission as an application to the United States Air Force Academy class of 2019. I understand that my application will automatically be considered when general applications open on March 1.

I am going to apply to the academy but would it be smart to use this as the application? I wrote meaningful essays and responses but I want my application to be as thorough as possible when I do apply. Also, how competitive is summer seminar to get into?

Not sure, it's up to you! I'm sure you'd have to write more essays for the actual application, and that it just might be asking to use your personal info for your application. Is that a new option they have? I don't remember seeing it last year.

I went to USAFA's summer seminar this most recent summer (2013) and when you were selected you were sent a letter. In the letter, it said this:
"To put this in perspective, we had over 3,500 applicants. With only 600 openings to give, the competition was very intense. We would like to stress that selection or non-selection to Summer Seminar is not in any way tied to getting an appointment to the Air Force Academy."

When DS used that option I believe it was only general info that carried over. He had to write all new essays for the regular application.

He was not accepted for SS but did earn an all expense (airfare too) slot to the SAME Engineering 1 week camp held at AFA. Great experience for him!

i wouldnt check that box. from the time i submitted my summer seminar app to when i submitted my academy app, a LOT changed. I would start fresh and just make your real app as good as possible. Checking the box will save time, but if your goal is to be thourough, dont do it.

I disagree with zachserna7 (sorry). I suggest you fill out the app completely and as thoroughly as possible. They know things change. My DD was chosen to attend SS and later got a letter that she qualified for EA. Her friend did not (though she was included in EA, she never got the letter.) I truly believe it shows a level of commitment.

What was transferred to the full application was just the basic information, but when she was asked to fill out the full app later on, she still had 3 essays and all the other "check boxes" to fill in.

I have the same question. Can I ask what you ended up doing? As in which box you clicked

Thanks

Yeah, unless they've changed things dramatically, you'll still have to send them plenty of information (essays, CFA, recommendations, etc.) Allowing that to be my "initial" application just saved a lot of time in filling out basic information and such.

Of course, that could have changed-I'd advise talking to a counselor if you can.
