Summer Seminar Application

My daughter was working on the application for the summer seminar program over the weekend. I was a bit surprised when she came to me to find out what our household income is because they ask it on the application. What do you suppose the reason is for such a question?
 
Not sure the exact answer to this question, but they also ask this on the actual application for an appointment as well.
 
From my experience with applying to summer seminar, they want to take people from different demographics to attend summer seminar. I didn't get in, but that is what my ALO.
