Summer Seminar Decision

Hey guys, this year I applied for all three summer seminars (AF, Navy, Army). Recently I was notified of my acceptance into the Naval Academy Summer Seminar (NASS). I have yet to hear from the other academies. Unfortunately my schedule only permits for me to attend one summer seminar. I want to select the seminar which is best for me, yet the deadline for NASS confirmation is 9:00 of feb 23rd. WHAT SHOULD I DO??
 
Which service do you want to join? Which do you know least about and want to know more? Which is the closest for other visits? Which do you have a shot at getting an candidate overnight visit during the academic year? Pick your criteria, make a decision, don’t look back.
 
Philmont713 - not trying to hijack thread but did you go to Philmont already or are you going this summer? If this summer, that could limit your SS options. I went w/ DS summer before last & am going with my youngest in late June. DS is going to NASS but can’t fit AFSS in (hoping to get a weekend visit to CC in fall). For my DS, USNA is 1st choice but he really wants summer session to reinforce decision to attend SA and be an officer. It’s tough to fit everything you want to do into an already filled June.
 
Well, your decision is very limited at this time to the only acceptance received - NASS. You would have to think more if the others give you a thumbs up before that 23rd deadline.
 
As an officer in the military (and most other walks in life), you will need to often need to make decisions without having all of the data you would like. I would recommend that you set yourself a deadline (a couple of days prior to the final NASS deadline) and move forward based on the information you have at that point in time. Avoid paralysis through analysis and then after-the-fact what ifs... Remember, while attending an academy summer seminar may help confirm if an academy feels like the "right fit" for you, attendance (or non-attendance) will not have a significant impact on your application to any of the academies.

No matter which seminar you attend, make sure you are in shape and enjoy the experience. Good luck.

Thanks for all the advice guys! I especially appreciate FMHS-79's advice! In responce to the past posts: I went to philmont last summer as part of OATC (Order of the Arrow Trail Crew). I have other plans for this summer yet I have been very careful about not having overlapping programs.

Hey I had so the same problem... I applied to navy, army, and Air Force and heard back from navy before the other two. When I applied I had my heart set on the Air Force seminar but after much thought I reasoned that this opportunity was too good to pass up! So I'll be attending session 3 of NASS!! That being said I waited until the last possible minute to sign up to see if I would heard from the other branches in the meantime. If you aren't sure which you want to do most I suggest holding out to see if u hear from the others before the deadline. After that the decision is all yours. Good luck!!

I would email Admissions or whoever is in charge and ask. I did it for CV, I know it's not nearly the same thing but it can't hurt to ask.
 
In the past, they have let people change weeks if they have open slots for the week you want and/or someone who wants to switch to your week. It certainly doesn't hurt to ask. In my view, Week 1 is the "easiest" to get into and the hardest to switch out of -- the reason is that students in many parts of the country are still in high school that week so attending NASS that week/switching into that week is not an option. Thus, a smaller pool of applicants for Week 1 with the same number of slots.

As an aside, I think some folks put down Week 1 for NASS knowing that Week 1 is "less popular," hoping to get in that week and then switch into another week. (NOT suggesting the OP did this, just that I've seen it happen). Anyone considering that strategy should think again as it's very risky for the reasons stated above -- there are lots of folks who can only do Weeks 2/3 or maybe even only Week 3 b/c they're taking finals in h.s. the other weeks. And there are a limited number of slots for each week. AND USNA has better things to do then spend hours switching lots of students who have somehow ended up in a week they can't attend.:rolleyes: Thus, switching is possible but you should not count on it happening.
 
I would weigh the options. Last year, I was assigned week 1 and shortly thereafter realized it was my last week of school, the state track meet, and prom. (I obviously checked my schedule ahead of time but the meet and prom times were not distributed until after my acceptance) However, Navy is my dream and even just that little baby step of NASS was more important to me than any of the above. Tests were made up ahead of time, I skipped prom, and the stars aligned and I was able to compete my track events early enough to leave for NASS when I was done. If you truly value going to NASS, I wouldn’t take switching sessions lightly as there is a chance that they will take you out of your session, and not give you a replacement.
