I am a junior and will be taking the SAT in March, but I have 700 Reading/730 Math on my PSAT. Should I opt NOT to have my SS application be the pre-candidate application since I do not have SAT's yet? There is no SAT in January, so March is the next time they are offered. Thanks so much.

My DS didn't have his SAT scores until later on after completing his NASS application. He chose to still make it his preliminary application. All that happened was that he received an email later on saying they needed his SAT scores before determining whether to grant him official candidate status. It didn't seem to be a problem as once his scores arrived he was granted that status.

Thanks so much for letting me know. I appreciate it.

I personally would reccomend to have it be the pre-candidate application just to make things easier and to get it out of the way, but either way won't necessarily help/hurt you. With a 1430 you're not likely to get rejected candidate status anyway, and you'll always be able to update your scores as they come in.

There is a reason USNA allows PSAT/PLAN scores as a part of the NASS/PCQ...most HS juniors (typically) haven’t sat for the SAT/ACT. Your official SAT/ACT will be required if you are designated an official candidate. Worst case scenario, if you aren’t designated an official candidate, USNA will just ask for updated SAT/ACT scores. Can’t recall if PSAT score equates into the exact SAT scoring, but if so, you shouldn’t have much to worry about.

It's a "preliminary" application.... just enough to get your foot in the door. You will have plenty of opportunity to take SAT's and submit scores as the process goes forward.

When I filled out the NASS application there was never a choice to make it the preliminary application, it just is. The heading of the application states to not fill out a preliminary application if you have submitted a NASS application.

You are correct -- it is USAFA that asks to check the "opt" if you want it to be your pre-candidate app. I meant that NSS app was unclear if it was ok to ONLY have PSAT scores. Sounds like it should be ok. Thanks so much for your help.

It actually is fairly clear in the application instructions (link included at the top of the online application that should be read before filling out the application). It says if only the PSAT has been taken, to include those scores.

Did you use internet explorer as requested to submit app for NASS? Seems to not be supported, and none of our home computers have it. My DS could use school computer to do so, as the request is in RED! There are other discrepancies on the link for how to do app and the actual app, wonder if that is outdated. My DS also asked 2 midshipman in my house (DD 2019 and friend 2018 heading out for brigade reform yesterday) for advice on this and they said basically we don't know! And kudos to you for getting it out so early!

Landlock, USNA Admissions tweeted a few hours ago that their website was having technical difficulties. I actually had technical issues my first time submitting, but I called Admissions and they helped me. A few of my friends from STEM who I keep in touch with also had difficulties. Don't be afraid to be proactive with Admissions and give them a call. They also responded promptly to my email. I used Safari to submit my application on my school computer. If you are having difficulties still, try switching to Chrome, or maybe try another computer, e.g. one at your local library. I think Admissions will have the site up and running soon, so hang tight, as the application is not first-come first-served. Good luck!
