Hello... new here, although I have been reading the forums for several weeks and learning so much great information for my son who is a junior and just beginning the application process. One question regarding Summer Seminar... I see that there are three weeks of SS, if he is lucky enough to get in, do they assign him to one of those weeks or is he able to select his choice of weeks? Trying to plan around Boys State and he would also like to attend USNA Swim Camp again, but of course they all fall in the same 2-3 week period. Appreciate any input!

They assign your week. When my DS applied last February, the application asked which weeks he could attend. He checked 2 and 3 (1 conflicted with final exams) and when accepted, he was assigned week 3.

I lucked out--I was able to go to Boys State as well--they're pretty flexible though if it doesn't work out.

Honestly, I would choose Boy's State over NASS if forced to make the choice.

If you are considered competitive, you do have a good shot at a CVW invitation (you can always request for one like I did and got it).

NASS= USNA summer camp

It was a great experience, but based from what I have heard CVW>NASS in terms of learning about the academy because you see what happens not experiencing water-down simulations of SA life.

I would have your son go to as many as possible. Our son went to the summer sessions at the Naval Academy, West Point, and Coast Guard as well as Boy's State. He was able to understand at a deeper level what each branch had to offer, differences in campuses, personalities, strengths, etc. The downside was that he had to come back and take final exams late. But, one can do it!

Definitely take Boys' State over NASS. Boys' State is worth decent points on WCS, and it's a really good experience.

As for finals, I think it's worth it to miss a few for NASS, as long as you're not in any hot water in your classes. There's nothing wrong with taking them at a later date.

But all in all, if you miss NASS or aren't selected, you're not missing out on anything crucial. If you want to see the Academy, you can quite literally visit at any time. CVWs will also be given out to competitive candidates.
