Summer Seminar

Payment due March 31

Since payment is due March 31, it's possible some slots have not been filled or will open back up because of failure to pay (my guess). So keep good thoughts.

Nope, not that we've seen. We, like several others we know, are waiting for NASS and hoping to cancel AF if selected for that. As mentioned the deadline for payment is March 31. If we don't know by then, son is going to have to make a tough decision - go with AF for the sure thing, or turn it down and hope for NASS!

Thank-you so much for the dates! Our son is still waiting to hear back from the S.S. He has been accepted to the SLS and will be attending the first session. I am curious if Lee's daughter got her birthday present (on the11th)? Hope so.
I am going to session 1 too for SLS! where are you from?

Nothing yet from NASS. Still waiting here too. My son is going to session 1 for AF SS. Beware that payment has to ARRIVE for AF SS by March 31st not postmarked by that date.

Information on SS straight from the source

Hi all!

As most of you know, I'm an ALO and have been for a long time. I've been following the summer seminar thread and there's so much angst, speculation, etc., and I know it's really wearing on folks. So I made a call today and spoke with THE person that makes the call here. And I was given verbal authorization to tell ya'll some things.

So here goes, the good and the "bad" if you will.

All primary selections for Summer Seminar at USAFA have been made. If you have not received "the" e-mail, then you are not a primary selectee. I'm sorry to put it blunt, but there's no other way to say it.

HOWEVER...

The USAFA, for the first time ever, is now re-reviewing those applicants that were NOT selected and they are going to create basically a "wait list." They are going to name a certain number of folks to this list. Then as folks turn down their slot, a name will be chosen to replace that person. And they want this to be very fair and open. So how will they do it?

The AFA envisions making the selections from the same state. That is to say, if you were "wait listed" from Arkansas and a student from Arkansas drops out, then you are eligible for their slot. This would allow you to compete with YOUR neighbors and not nationally per se. This is NOT to say that there is a quota from any state or region; far from it, they're just trying to keep the numbers balanced. I'm guessing (my opinion for a second, not something they told me) is that they'd prefer that you compete with your own demographic as opposed to an elite listing. Again, that's my opinion and it could be totally wrong.

If they end up with more openings and the "demographics" have worked out then they'll take the remaining slots and pick the best folks they can.

How many folks will be "wait listed?" The numbers they were tossing around could go as high as 150 or so. They just don't know how many folks will turn them down, drop out, etc.

ALL applicants should be receiving this information soon. If you have been selected you've already received the e-mail. If not, you will hear officially soon; I just don't know the date.

I know this isn't the news a lot of folks wanted to hear, but I wanted to try to eliminate some of the angst of the wait.

Even though final decisions for summer session have been made, application stauts still reads that application is "under consideration". Is that because it is now considered an application for admission to the academy or is there just a lag in updating status. Son did not get invited to the dance, but that is ok. There is still plenty of fun to be had this summer.

I was not selected for AFA SS either and my application status also reads "under consideration". I took it to mean that it's under consideration for the wait list or something, or maybe it doesn't change to a "Not Selected" at all. Also, since the SS application also serves as a PCQ, I found out from going https://admissions.usafa.edu/ > Online Application > Status of already submitted application > and then typing in SSN and DOB that my application has been considered "competitive".

I guess that's that of AFA SS for now. Now I'll just have to focus on getting noms for AFA!

flieger83, you may or may not know this, but it sounds like they are expecting that some people will probably drop out. Is this assumption correct? Because I know that if I'm accepted for NASS I will want to drop AFASS because my family simply can't afford doing both. (both tuitions + total airfare = $350 + $350 + $1200 = getting up towards $2000+ when it's all said and done) I was just wondering if I'd get a bad response from AFA.

Same for my son. We figure he'll get to see USAFA at Parents' Weekend for his brother in Sept, so he was really hoping to get a chance to see Navy too. And now I'm getting nervous about finding out in time!

It's the same type of thing with me. My freshman year of high school I got to follow an USAFA Cadet for the day so I got to see what USAFA was like. Even with cadets there. Navy's always been my first choice but I want to make sure I'm not gonna be in a place I'm miserable for four years. Plus I wanna see the differences in how things work.

Hi!

Yes, they expect quite a few people to "opt out" of the program; hence my previous posting about them setting up a "wait list."

Yay - son got his NASS acceptance today, so he'll be opting for that one instead. Going to make sure that's what he wants (yes, I'm a bad mom and opened his mail! ). He's at school, then has track, then solo/ensemble for band but I'll see him someday and let him know! If so, we'll be calling USAFA Monday to cancel - anyone waiting from WI?!

Got my rejection letter in the mail today. The site still says "under consideration" but on my actual academy app it says "not competitive" (I'm guessing because of my ACT math score). Just thought I'd let you guys know... :bang:

Germanator,

I know that is really a big disappointment, but don't get discouraged. Do not loose any excitement or energy about the process of applying to the Academy. Although Summer Seminar is a really fun way to spend some of your summer and learn more about the Academy, it is not our ultimate goal. If you really want the Academy, then that should be your goal. I also received that exact same thin letter almost exactly a year ago, but I got the Big Fat Letter this year. Don't loose hope about the academy because they didn't accept you for summer seminar. If you let every thin letter that comes discourage you, you will loose all your confidence. I had also gotten the thin letter from all 3 of my MOC denying me a nom, but received an appointment a week later off a presidential. Never ever give up. "Where there is a will, there is a way." Find the will and you will find a way.

Later,

Brian

Hmm should I got to AFA SS? I'm sort of indifferent about USAFA.

Can anyone share past experiences at AFA SS?
