Summer Seminar

Thanks

First off, thanks to everyone for all the postings, many of my questions have been answered and many more that I hadn't even thought of as well...I will be attending the USAFA June 6-10 session and the USNA session June 18-24. I am very, very excited to have this opportunity and look forward to learning much more about each academy.

Has anyone been to SLS (USMA's) and SS (USAFA's)? I am looking for a comparison of the two, and which one would be better to go to. I want to go to USAFA, but that is much further away. Any suggestions?
Note: This is all for next year!

I attended both last year. Both are good for information and such to get a small taste of the different academies and their respective cadets which is the point of the sessions, but like John mentioned, USAFA's SS is much more laid back. For me, it was almost more like your typical summer camp with the cadets referring to us as "campers" at some points and just general not being on the same level of interest of what was going on in the SS as I saw in the USMA cadets while at SLS. They actually told us by the time they had gotten to our session, they had given up on teaching us how to try to march or get into formation because it wasn't worth trying as we wouldn't do well with them. This kind of attitude sort of killed some of the enthusiasm of the week for me.

Part of that is because as I picked up from my cadre as USAFA's SS, this was not her first or second choice to be spending her summer, but she was doing it as required for leadership requirements (which I totally can understand). The cadre at USAFA also were rising firsties for the most part while USMA cadets were yearlings so I don't know if the age difference would have an impact as well. The USMA cadets impressed me a lot more while I was there in their interest and willingness to push you and open up to you while you were there instead of just acting like they were stuck babysitting you. The cool thing with the USAFA cadets though was that since they were older, they had already chosen branches (? not sure if that's the right terminology) and you could do a lot of talking ot them about that while the USMA cadets hadn't really reached that point in their careers yet.

Please do not take that as me hating on USAFA cadets; I have the utmost respect for the cadets that I was able to spend time with while I was there for SS and when I was out there for a recruiting visit, but the quality of presentation of the different seminars, I found USMA's much better and inspiring. At USMA, everything was about being a part of a team while my element at USAFA did not have the same experience. Doolie day was definitly a good experience though that you wouldn't get at USMA's SLS.

Really, you have to take both experiences with a grain of salt anyways as they're only able to ever give you a taste of what academy life can be like to see if you can imagine yourself doing something like that for four years of your life as well as providing a forum for you to get any and all questions answered. If you leave one of the academy seminars without asking all your questions about that particular academy, shame on you. Look to take advantage of the opportunities you can. Any of the seminars are really only what you make out of them

Packing Checklist has no mention of shirts....

DS is off to Session A SS next week. We were going through the packing checklist yesterday... We also looked at all forum advice on extra socks, power bars, leave extra space, bring empty carry on bag, have a good attitude, ask lots of questions, have fun, etc.. thanks!

Day time is taken up with PT clothing, but what about the evening? Packing list mentions the khakis, but only mentions the one Polo shirt that they will be given as part of uniform wear.

Here's the question: Should they be bringing other polos/button downs of their own, or are they required to wear the same USAFA polo shirt given to them every night

That's because you will wear your "PT" shirts with the khakis when they're not being worn with the shorts. You only wear the polo shirt once.

I have another question about packing. Do they need to bring dress shoes for the last night? I know the packing list said 1-2 pairs of athletic shoes, but somewhere I read about taking shoes as well for the dinner. What is everyone's take on this? I don't want him to take any unnecessary things. Thanks for all the information on this whole website!!:::thumb:

Take what it says. No other shoes are needed.

"Bring... dress shoes as well (for the final dinner)"
Are you supposed to bring sunday dress clothes as well? What do you wear for the final dinner?
Oh, I have 2 pairs of tan pants. Will that be enough or should I go search for another pair?

Bring Resume To Summer Seminar?

I read that a candidate interview will be conducted at Summer Seminar. Should DS have a few resumes on hand to be giving to people out there?

Unless they changed something from last year, no reason to take resumes to the people up there. I never had a candidate interview conducted when I attended.

I never did this somewhat formal "final dinner." Just bring what it says, just bring what it says. Bringing multiples of something can't hurt, but just bring the specific items it says as well as anything else you need to operate. For the last dinner we ate, we wore the AF polo issued and khaki pants. Bring dress clothes if you want, but you won't be wearing them unless the packing list asks for them.

I never interviewed for anything. Bring them if you want, but you're probably not going to be using them.

I can't speak to who the cadre were for SS last year, but I know this year about 90% of us are all volunteers, and looking forward to everyone coming out, so hopefully they'll have a better experience this year. It's actually nice to hear about last year...now I can learn from your experience, and help everyone in my elements to have an awesome, educational, and inspirational time.

Mikil, that's cool that you're taking the time to read and posting on these boards for candidates and future attendees of SS. I still have so much respect for the cadre I had and the other cadets at USAFA, and it was my choice of college until I found out that I was accepted to my #1. I took my time at SS with a grain of salt and just tried to learn as much as I could while I was there which was my job anyways. I bet your element will do awesome this year!

I will be attending Summer Session 1 next week and I don't recall seeing the packing list being discussed in this thread.

Was it sent in email or in a paper form via US Mail? Is the list short enough that someone could post it here?

In your acceptance letter, there was a link to all NASS paperwork, including a "NASS Selected Instructions" document. The list of items to bring was on page 4. If you need the specific link, PM me.

sorry -- error in previous post

Sorry - was on wrong thread with my previous post! This was for USNA not USAFA.

It should be on the page that tells you about your acceptance.

Go to your summer seminar online application page. On the bottom of the page above all of the forms you need to complete, it has a link that says "registration, travel planning, and packing checklist." Click on the link and it'll take you to the packing list.
