I am applying for the summer seminar. The thing is that I will be doing volunteer service with my church really soon and get a job. Is it better to just wait and put it in until I start these things? The reason I ask is because I heard you have a much higher chance if you submit the application ASAP, like the first couple of days.

apply sooner rather than later.

what job is not going to give you time off for wanting to do something awesome like this?!

The thing that is hurting me is that I don't have my PSAT scores back yet and I'am taking the ACT on December 12th. Will it hurt me if I apply in Mid December to where atleast I put my PSAT scores in?

Send in your other scores as soon as you get them. Apply now.

In your application you can mention that you plan to volunteer and get a job.

I wouldn't think so. Last year no one heard anything until mid-January. My son was out there for a visit on January 12th and at that point, at least according to his counselor (and what we saw on the boards), nothing had been sent out yet.

My younger son is in the same predicament as you. No PSAT scores back yet and taking the same ACT. He's going to wait until he has both sets of scores and submit everything at once then. Looks like ACT scores should be available on Dec 28 (hopefully!) and my guess is that they really don't start looking at anything until they get back from break anyways.

However, if you are applying to other SS's, I will say those were different. My son applied to WP's SLS on Dec. 16th (the first day the online system was up and working) and got his acceptance dated the 17th. But I really think none of the academy slots fill until much later so it's better to wait for the scores than to submit a less-impressive application without them.

FWIW, my son applied to USAFA SS on 2/1 (the same day that USNA opened up its applications for NASS). He got email from USAFA a couple of days later with his acceptance for the SS. He applied to USMA SLS also on 2/1 and got acceptance letter in the mail a couple of days later. Applied to USNA SS on 2/1 but didn't get accepted. Interestingly enough he ended up getting LoAs to all 3. Bottomline to this comment is try to get the best application you can together, and just because you don't get accepted to a summer seminar it doesn't mean you aren't a competititve candidate for the academies.

I took the PSATs last year and this year, but of course my scores for this year havent come in. I wanted to apply fairly early for the summer seminar since I heard you have a better chance and it looks better, but I dont know if I should wait for my new PSAT scores to come in. Would it hurt me to put my sophomore scores in? They are 62 CR 66 Math and 54 Writing. I know that they are pretty low and I really think I did better on my newer ones, but should I submit these first and when the others come in send those? Thank you for all your help!

Back to the original question: I would not advise putting down a job you do not have yet. What if you break your ankle, get the flu, etc, etc, etc and do not wind up with the job. That you listed on your app. Not a good plan.

A small detail that may not apply to you but hopefully worth mentioning. If you THINK there is a possible future summer conflict with a job, sports camp, etc, APPLY ANYWAY.
The act of "applying" scores you points. It shows that you have knowledge of the Academy early, showed interest early, and they start a file on you before anyone else.
You can decline it later without penalty.
Good luck.

you should reply now with whatever scores and information you have! you still have to have an interview with your ALO once they see you've submitted an application. their interview with you is a component of being accepted. so, probably by the time you have an interview, you will have updated scores, or at least you can tell them!

That really seems to vary by location. We didn't have to do interviews for SS here, nor did several of the kids my son met at SS. We were surprised to read about people doing them here on the boards. But I do agree to allow time since your ALO may require it!
