Super Bowl Flyover - All Women Navy Team

At this point these are so contrived. Since we LUV publicising things about immutable characteristics as headline "firsts" every 15 minutes, I look forward to when all left-handed, lazy-eyed, or Irish do the first superbowl flyover, or fly to Guam, or fly a CAP in Poland, or for a CBG in the Pacific, or for a CBG in the Med, or Indian Ocean, .....

You would think success would be to NOT keep focusing on this. Yet here we are.

Hate me me all you want but the more you insist on SCREAMING "Look at me! Look at me!", the more you obscure whether those female pilots got there on merit or not. You do them a disservice.

If I'm wrong, let me know which one of those pilots wants to report to her next unit and be introduced day one to the squadron as "[callsign] is the first female to...[fill in the blank].

I had very good friend, female, Hispanic, over-achiever. Her fear and albatross was people would think she got her positions due to sex and race and not due to competence.

You sound fun to be around.

Did you actually watch the interviews with these pilots? She had a great perspective….

‘A pilot, who happens to be a woman’.

You sound fun, too. I'll bet at get togethers you'd be the life of the party talking endlessly of first this, first that, maybe "the next first is coming up! Yay!" Hard to grow tired of listening to firsts AND so helpful to those that actually did the firsts.

I met LT Amanda Lee this past summer. She seemed to think "First female Blue Angel" was a pretty badass introduction. Airboss (3 star, tomcat, super hornet, command at every level, 1000+ traps) also seemed think an all-female flyover to celebrate 50 years is pretty badass. In fact, I think he used those exact words last night.

Nope. Why would I? Are they special? Do they want to be treated as special?

Serious question.

You don't think caveating her as a female in an introduction disimproves prospects for females to come? So tired of stunts. Ask yourself if a 3 star is doing that, did she get there by merit? Maybe yes, maybe no, but the 3 star's involvement will forever leave a question mark. Do you think that 3 star helped her credibility if he did not provide equal bonfides to the other blue angels?

Not to detract from the conversation but the correct term is CVBG not CBG. And why are you picking on the Irish? Go Navy! Beat Notre Dame! I'm Dublin bound.

I'm a landlubber so please accept my thanks for your insights.

In summary, everytime the media, politicians, or military leadership highlights a "first time a minority did...", it diminishes the accomplishments of those who did it. Check your sundials...it's 2023

I disagree. Acknowledging forward movement in no way denigrates the achievement, regardless of the venue.

And, by the way, women are actually the majority...

As a female pilot, I’ve never flown in an all female crew. Just hasn’t worked out that way in my career. Would I go looking for it to make it happen? No, but it also would be a cool moment because it is still not close to the norm in my profession. It it did happen, it would definitely get a couple passing comments and then everyone would go back to their normal business where I work.

So I agree with @FutureAcademyDad?’s post. Nothing wrong with the highlight on a day of significance and very cool opportunity for these ladies. I hope they have a blast!

Great perspective, Casey. It is also enough for me that spparkervt's DD, a USNA hopeful, loved the story. A young woman who wants to serve, inspired by those fighter pilots that do. There are no issues here, and we should celebrate this now because I hope in another fifty years this is a historic discussion, not an academic one.

It does denigrate the achievement when it seems contrived. I guess it's lucky some 3 star didn't decide the only thing better than having all women fly this would be if we dropped one and replaced her with a different flavor. So, if that happened, which pilot would you choose to replace?
And, by the way, women are actually in the minority of combat positions. They were force branching them into infantry this year (per this forum).

I’m just going to enjoy the hell out of it and enjoy the roar of the engines and appreciate the dedication, work, sacrifice, sweat, tears, lost sleep, and commitment to their shipmates as it plays out during the flyover. Just like I have the last two 9/11 weekend home footballs games at Navy Memorial stadium. Leaves me with chills and needing Kleenex.

Kudos to the pilots who have kicked a$& and have my respect.

We could just stop overthinking things and enjoy them. It is historic and worth commemorating.

Reminds me of a Beyoncé song regarding girls and the world (nobody get their knickers twisted, it’s kind of a fun reference, disclaimer: not saying it is 100% truth, chill, it’s a song).

Yes, women are the minority in the military, but they are the majority of the overall population. And for military roles that do not require brute strength, there is no reason that women should not eventually be in the majority there also.

As the father of 2 daughters who have routinely outperformed the majority of males against whom they have completed, at the Academies and everywhere else, I look forward to the day that their accomplishments are simply acknowledged, instead of being disparaged as somehow contrived or unearned.

There is no one getting hurt in this 50th year celebration …. How is this celebration a burden to you … can you quantify the harm to you in dollar terms?

I’m just an unfrozen Caveman Lawyer … so forgive me if I don’t see the harm, or the ways of your world.

“Explore the space …. I have a fever, and the only prescription is More Cowbell” … more cowbell please …. I am loving this Celebration.

👏… I have a 2C daughter who is thinking Aviation …. Don’t ruin this good feeling … 👏
