DS has an LOA for USNA, but no nomination. He's got a nom for USAFA, but no word on appt. Someone on one of the forums had mentioned something about the "Superintendent" being able to give a nomination to someone like DS with an LOA but no nom. How do we do this? Is it automatic or do we need to contact somebody at USNA to ask for it?

A superintendent nomination is not something you apply for. It's just one you hope for when other avenues do not pan out.

(A limited number given to the Superintendent USMA to use at his discretion - usually given to varsity athletes and as a means to try to conform the demographic mix of USMA with the U.S. Army's.)

I'm aware of LOA candidates (non-recruited athletes) being given a Supe's nom. Supe's noms are used for all sorts of candidates whom USNA really wants but who don't have a nom.

That said, there are undoubtedly more LOA candidates w/o noms than there are Supe's noms. Being honest, some LOA candidates w/o noms will get turndowns. I've seen it happen quite a few times.

For future candidates, this is why we stress that LOAs are great but they are only the first step. In the past, there was a sense that USNA would "find" a nom for all LOA recipients. That is no longer the case.

I'd also like to add that Supe Nominations are used VERY SPARINGLY, under 5 (from what I was told) per Admissions cycle; they are used in very special circumstance or unusual instances. Exactly as USNA1985 said, USNA doesn't necessarily "find" nominations.

This is also why we promote the idea of applying for the one sure nom: the Vice President's nom. I does work; I have had candidates who have gotten in on the VP nom. It is important to pay attention to detail, be thorough, and don't take anything for granted.
