The start of the Fall sports season is now marked each year by the Secretaries' Cup football game when the U.S. Coast Guard Academy faces off against its rivals from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (King's Point).

In 2003, the schools jointly established the Superintendent’s Trophy, adding to the tradition. This contest also pits USCGA against USMMA but for the entire academic year. One point is awarded to the winning school after each match, giving all sports equal weight. The school with the highest score is presented with the Superintendent's Trophy in a halftime ceremony at the Secretaries' Cup, with the winning school keeping possession of the trophy until the next year.

We will be flying up tomorrow to catch the action... We will definitely be at the soccer game at noon and then we expect to hit the football game right after. It should be a great weekend!

Yep, the rivalry continues for both the Secretaries Cup and the Superintendent's Trophy. At the conclusion of the game this weekend, for the first time since it's inception in 2003, the Mariners will be taking the Superintendent's Trophy to Kings Point as "we" won it for the first time last year....

The 2009 - 2010 results were: Kings Point 7-5; in head to head varsity competition vs. the Coast Guard Academy. USMMA's seven victories came from Soccer (2-0), Football (33-27, 2OT), Offshore Sailing (Shields Trophy), Men's Basketball (73-58), Women's Basketball (67-63), Wrestling (37-0), and Dinghy Sailing. Coast Guard's wins were Women's Volleyball (3-0), Men's Swimming (175-125), Women's Swimming (154-89), Baseball (4-5, 3-2, 13-6) and Tennis (7-2). The softball competition was canceled due to a conflict with a Coast Guard make up of a conference game.

Good luck to all the athletes' on both sides, I'm just wishing a bit of extra luck to the Mariners -

Coast Guard is being very hospitable this year and is giving the KP team ice for their sidelines. Normally, they bring their own, but the midshipman with the recipe graduated last year.:shake: Go Bears!

Picture a perfect Saturday afternoon, 71 degrees on the banks of the Thames River, with sailboats passing a few hundred yards from most seats at Cadet Memorial Field. Midshipmen dressed in white pack one side of the stadium. Cadets in their blues are on the other side, not far from the alumni who wear knee-high dress socks and mesh hats pronouncing the war they served in.....
