Hey guys,

To keep it brief, I was suspended from my high school for 1 day due to a derogatory online commentI made about another student.

I was wrong. What I did jeopardized my appointment and I'm wondering what my next steps should be.

Thanks everyone.

You've heard the phrase that bad news does not age well? IMHO, you should contact your admissions counselor as soon as practicable and explain the situation. Don't sugar coat it, or make excuses...

Well …. This is a lesson, for sure.

I would be very concerned if any Web Crawler, especially Google, can get at the message. Most of these spaces are Not guarded. You don't want your trash and dirty laundry spread out for every one to see.

Building on the advice above, make sure the powers that be hear about it from you, not from others or from a social media search. Own it, own up to it, learn from it.

And for Gods sake...just get off social media for a while.
I would award 5 bags of Capt MJs emoji popcorn to BoCoMoRex (If I knew how to do it) for posting the single best piece of advice I’ve ever read on this forum.

Since DS received his appointment I’ve been asked multiple times what the best advice I can give, this is my response; get off all social media.

As others have said, own your mistake, not only verbalize it but consider a short essay to convey what you have learned from your mistake.

Best of luck!

I wouldn't write anything until directed to do so by Admissions. If written explanation needed, keep it short, answer the question(s), & have someone you trust proofread it before submission. Be guided by your Admissions Counselor. You're not the first-Good Luck!

I have to agree with the "get off social media" thing. DS got off it as a midshipman and has never returned. He still uses it to keep up with friends but you never see him posting. I have to get some of the latest personal news from his girlfriends web page, or the monthly phone call.

I tell every candidate to stop any and all social media as they are going through the process. This is very important when you have an Appointment. As a BGO I look up a candidate before I interview them. Many times I am able to see something they did not want to share. Remember everything you post on the internet is out there somewhere. We had a person who at one time posted so much info on these forums that all you had to do was a 3 min google search and you knew exactly who he and his poor son was. Again I would highly suggest cut the cord.

And also things you DONT post! A person can search things you are tagged in. Even unknowingly....

Derogatory has a rather large scope. I would say the context matters for sure in every instance. A simple critical statement of truth may not be unacceptable in certain contexts. It would not be the first time a school was overly P.C. Patrick Henry had a good quote about holding back on one's opinions for fear of offending someone. It's not always bad to express one's opinion, if done tactfully.
