My DD has accepted her appointment! Very excited. Interested to know if they will have any free time at end of Swab summer before school starts. I had heard not to expect for them to be home until Thanksgiving. Can parents visit after Swab summer? Any information is greatly appreciated.

They go right into CAP week which is administrative processing. They get ready for the school year that week. The next days off would be Labor Day which is a 3 day weekend.

Your only opportunity to see them during Swab Summer is at the Mystic Flag Ceremony. After that, it would be Parent's Weekend. For Thanksgiving, they leave after their last military obligation Wednesday-Sunday.

Actially you can see them LaborDay weekend as it is a 3 day weekend. Lots of parents go out there to visit if they live far away. It is also a good time to help your cadet to stock up on things they need like a printer etc. Some have their cadets come home. Just remember they must be back on time!!!

As far as Thanksgiving , they can leave after their LMO on Tuesday. Once again some parents go out there others have their cadet fly home.

Not true - if you go Eagle chasing, you can spend some time with them in port when they have liberty. As @corescue59 notes, Labor Day weekend is a great time to see your cadet for the long weekend. And post-swab summer, you can always go to New London and see them on campus if you need to for some reason - not sure its advisable, though - better to cut the apron strings.

New parents need to familiarize themselves with the term "Semper Gumby" which translates to "Always Flexible". As an example - you can visit with your cadet during Mystic Flag Ceremony provided they are not on Eagle. During DS's swab summer, there were some transportation issues moving cadets to/from Maine. Many cadets did not have liberty and parents had to go on a ship's tour to try and see their cadet. Additionally, military and sports obligations can also impact your DD/DS's free time. Remember "Your cadet is the best source of information" as they best know their schedule. Join the CGA Parent's FB page as there are seasoned parents that can provide insight. Finally, if you don't have Amazon Prime - sign up! The free 2 day shipping direct to academy soon pays for the annual membership. Most of anything your cadet may need can be purchased on Amazon.

@cave9269 Thank you for the info! This all so new. So there 3 separate groups of swabs on the Eagle? And depending on the group assigned, will leave from different ports? TIA

I’m learning as we go as well!
But, yes- 3 groups.
1. Halifax to NYC
2. NYC to New London
3. New London to Boston

Phase 1 departs Halifax on 7/25 which appears to be the same date as Mystic. I understand that this happens from year to year.

Keep in mind your cadets will also have duty and other military obligations that might fall over or during weekends. If you plan on flying out to see them or having them fly home that you make sure you tickets that are refundable or you can change.

Eagle is never a definite and there are many stories of parents arriving to a port, only to watch Eagle sail away with their Swab aboard. Mystic tends to be the best recommendation for parents to have "guaranteed" time with their Swabs, who are granted liberty for the day. The day may overlap with Swab first phase, but even the late changes last year allowed for all 3 groups to be present at Mystic. As stated above, in all things Semper Gumby.

Except a third of the kids won't be at Mystic. Of course nothing is guaranteed, but every parent I have known who went Eagle chasing got to spend quality time with their swab. They get pretty liberal libo in port. I think we had 8 or 10 straight hours with ours.
