Swab summer-Should my DS miss part for brother’s wedding?

My DS is waiting to hear back on his application but if he gets an appointment I’m not sure if he should come home during swab summer to be in his brother’s wedding even though they said you can be excused for weddings and funerals. Any thoughts? The wedding is 7/1 so right after it starts so I keep thinking he should just stay and miss the wedding so he bonds with his team and isn’t looked down on for getting a break right away after starting. Any input you can provide would be greatly appreciated!

Once you drop your DS off for swab summer (which this year is 26 June) there is no going home for him until after swab summer (unless if something of such great importance that the commandant of cadets approves your swab to go home... and the only thing in my mind that would warrant that would be death of an immediate family member). The first weekend for you DS to really go home would be Labor Day weekend (depending if you are local or not).

Even if they did permit it it would be really hard to miss any part of swab summer for the reason ls you stated and more! I would 100 percent say he would need to stay put.

Agree with Offshore, no chance he can, or should, leave for part of Swab Summer.

I don't really see how it would be possible to leave and successfully return. There will be enough unexpected hurdles during the summer, I just can't imagine voluntarily leaving for a wedding. I'm very surprised that is allowed. The death of an immediate family member is the only reason I can think of to leave. And even that would be a very quick and difficult trip home. Hard, hard pass on the wedding.

I was thinking it would not be good so thanks for the feedback. We’ll see if he makes it in. If not or he is referred to prep school it will be a moot point anyway.

If your DS gets in, here’s a suggestion used by many of our USNA sponsor mids who couldn’t make it to a wedding or other military people on deployment, for their kids to maintain presence.

Life-size cardboard cutouts, or a “flat daddy.” They can be taken to rehearsal dinners, appear in photos, be propped up while a designated person next to it reads a letter or a toast to the bride, etc. Probably not at the ceremony… but could be In wedding pics. Look on Amazon. Possibly Kinko’s. A way to be part of it all and not the “missing brother.” A fun photo to have as a cadet.

Semper Gumby - always a flexible.
