Sweating ap Calc grade

I also believe in nothing ventured, nothing gained.

--Hah, if you venture excuses, then you will see a worse outcome than if you had just accepted your failure at USAFA. Most of the assumptions I made are very likely applicable to the OP.

You apparently cannot read very well since my post said NOTHING about excuses and agreed with your post to the extent that it advocated the Basic to be in taking responsibility for his actions. That said, it IS possible that there were OTHER contributing factors that resulted in his situation. And I'm sure you learned at USAF or elsewhere what happens when you "Ass u me" All I know of the OP's son, is that he, like you, worked hard to get his appointment and received one. That he is human and makes mistakes, like you did when you were truant for whatever reasons. That despite your mistake (or perhaps the truancies were intentional) your appointment was not rescinded and the opportunity to succeed at USAFA remained. My position is, that the son IS in quite the predicament and the stress today must have been off the charts...I can only hope that despite his mistake (or his intentions) that IF he truly WANTS to keep the appointment, he is permitted to do so...I'd hate to think this one mistake is his doom. That said, it could be and his attitude after will determine what KIND of human being he will be.

As I type we are sweating recission of appointment due to AP Calc grade. Our son's final is tomorrow. 70 is a pass at our school. He may pass the marking period but not the year due to a fail third quarter. We leave Tuesday for CSP. All his others grades are 80's and 90's except Calc. He notified admissions in May of the issue and was told to wait until the end of the year. Here we are and admissions called yesterday to say there was a major problem. We are hoping this doesn't cause him to be pulled out of line. They want the grades on Monday and we leave Tuesday morning. Advice, words of doom, or encouragement are welcome.

Hi abby2015,
We were wondering how it turned out? Been hoping/praying for the best.

Happy to say DS efforts to pull grade up paid off - he passed class!
(Know some wanted to know outcome, so we wont know what might have been decided with a failing grade)
Know also that he never gave up even when it seemed unlikely due to third quarter score. This was ap calc taken as an elective to challenge himself as he already had enough math, and he chose not to drop the class earlier in year. It was a tough and risky call but i think he learned much from this.

That is great news Abby.

Might I suggest that your son sign up for EI on the very first day for whatever math class into which he qualifies after BCT testing. Even if he doesn't "need" it, he'll be ahead of the game, and it will boost his confidence. EI doesn't necessarily mean "OMG! I'm going to fail this class!" It often means "See how smart I really am? I've got help BEFORE I need it."

Congrats to your son for persevering and conquering!

I agree with the EI. My DS requested EI for any material he was having trouble grasping throughout the year and he ended up with a 3.8 GPA. He would tell you he did well in part because he sought out the help early. Had he waited or not gotten EI he would not have done as well.

Abby, thanks for the update and congrats to your DS. I am sure the lessons and hard work he did throughout the semester will assist with his future as a USAFA Cadet. One of the best parts of a SA is the small class sizes and accessibility to professors. I am sure your DS will be working with his professor early and often to ensure this never happens again. Best of luck to him!

That's awesome news! I can see why your son was selected as an appointee. He worked hard, pushed through and got his grade up. Congratulations!

Heres irony
First semester in the books as c4c and his calc grade was the highest!

It's wouldn't call it irony. It was him learning from a hard lesson in HS and applying it in his life. The lesson made him stronger and better prepared for challenges moving forward. That is good on him. Unfortunately there are many that learn that first hard academic lesson when they are at USXA and it is much harder to overcome there. Congrats to your son!
