Yes, it is terrible. I wonder if it is the student or teacher who passed away.

Looks like it was two Captains who were in the crash. That means it wasnt a student from UPT. I feel terrible about the pilot who died. He was 32 and married. I cant even imagine how his wife and parents are feeling. I am however relieved that it wasnt a student from UPT. I dont know why that should make a difference except that my son will be at UPT next year and it would be hard to hear about a 22-23 year old dying. Hearing about a 32 man dying isnt any better

Always tough to hear these things. Prayers for the family. Our USAFA 2018 will likely be at UPT in a year.

The point is you shouldn't be happy about anything in this situation. Your words are hurtful and offensive to others on the forum.

My son is a Captain and an IP, so if the roles were reversed would you feel offended if I said that I am happy that it wasn't an IP? I bet you would.

I know that you are fairly new to the AF family, but I think you should really spend some time thinking about what you say in any situation where someone has lost a loved one. It will be good practice for the future if your son makes it through pilot training. The AF pilot community is really very small, and when there is a fatality there is a very good chance that your son will know, or at least know of the person who is lost. Most of the time it is best to just remain quiet for several days until all the facts are known, and then offer nothing but support for the affected families.

Also, responding to an earlier comment of yours: The fact that both pilots were Captains would prove nothing regarding being the IP or the student. Many UPT students are Captains, mostly due to being late-rated. Usually these UPT students come from another AFSC and applied to UPT from another job. Also, there are plenty of IPs who are Lieutenants (FAIPs), so their rank really tells you nothing about who was who. This flight just happened to be two Captain IPs, one of whom was getting a check ride for currency requirements.

Not happy anyone died and I made that perfectly clear and I am still glad it wasn’t some newly minted Lt. Glad it wasn’t A doesn’t mean I am glad it was B
