Have any of you ever tailor fitted your ABU in any way? I am a AS400 and I recently picked a brand new ABU and I was told I can keep it once I commission at half the price it originally costed But the fit is a bit baggy for my like. Specially the Coat.

Most of the uniforms at the Det are hand me downs from other cadets that are not in the program anymore and they are worn so I was lucky to find a new set. Some are different types of fabric either heavy weight winter weight or the new lightweight ripstop. I picked a brand new ripstop set with all its tags. Was thinking about fitting it to my like...any of you ever had to do that to make due? They don't have smaller sizes and I am petite. I feel like I am wearing a pajama. Lol.

Yeah I know girls that tailor their jackets on AD...but I’d make sure you’re going to keep those on AD and possibly buy them from your det before you make any alterations. I would not alter something that your det still owns, so it may be in your best interest to wait until you commission to alter it. I definitely bought myself a new service coat and had that altered before commissioning, and bought myself new ABUs also. So yeah, you can get it fitted just make sure you own it first!

I am with afrotc16. Our DS handed back all of his uniforms and purchased his own. We actually started purchasing once he was selected for SFT aka now LEAD, thus it was a slow buy...Blues, than Mess Dress, than ABUs (he is a pilot so he only needed them for casual status).

Additionally, unless your det. is close to a dry cleaner/tailor that is accustomed to military uniforms, I WOULD NOT get it tailored. We live in No VA and the dry cleaners/tailors deal day in day out with military customers, they know for example the hem on your pant is different than a dress pant hem (it curves down around the heel of the shoe, but no break in the front).
~ I work in retail (men's clothing). Trust me, 1 tuck the wrong way and it is all over, you will be replacing it! A tailor who has never worked with that fabric, or understands what is military reg. will equate in my mind to you buying a new uniform!

I am worried about that too but I already had to spent some $ altering the Blue's pants and next I will alter the skirt because I will be required to use those soon. The ABU can wait but I hate the way I look on it. I will probably ask the Cadre if they can order a smaller one...I know they have to order new uniforms soon because they are decommissioning a lot of them for damages. I have the luck of finding a tailor whose son is in the military and she told me she used to alter all of her sons uniforms...so far she has just sewn in my name tape on my ABU but will ask her anyway. If it costs too much then it will be better to just wait until I commission or invest in a new ABU altogether. Boots are also a problem. They have limited sizes. Looking to buy some that are lighter and more comfortable. Any ideas or brands that you guys can recommend?

In this case, my advice would be to just go ahead and buy the right size ABUs and get them altered the way you want. I got my stuff altered on base, and they know how to do it. You can finish out AFROTC wearing them and keep them on AD. If you end up buying some from your det too, it’s fine, as you’ll need a few pairs once you commission.

Also an AS400. Gaining a gut worked wonders for my ABUs!

But I digress- I'd say go on base and find a set that works best, and go with those. For boots, I love my Rocky C4Ts. But if you're going rated, you'll have to wear the flight approved/issued boots.
