TAMU Out of State - Scholarship Data

So, cadets have a choice of outfits? How does one know which to join? DD's major is chemistry and she will be in AFROTC and has a passion for flying. Do you have any recommendations?
So, AFROTC cadets would be assigned to one of the "Squadrons" likely based on major or you can "pick" what outfit you would be assigned to based upon family history, knowledge of a particular choice, etc. Completely your call. I don't have any recommendations as anything I know from back in the day has definitely changed a hundred times over. I would discuss with the AFROTC liaison at A&M and discuss your DD's main goals at A&M and in the Corps for direction.

My DD is a current OOS fish at TAMU. He received the national 4 year scholarship and was able to select his outfit. The tuition is calculated at instate rates, however the problem is the first semester when it is OOS rate until the ROTC payment is posted. This is dependent on when your cadet passes their PT test, is medically qualified etc... Cadets have to make tuition payments until the money is posted. My cadet passed his the first week there, however it wasn't until after the 3rd payment was due and paid by us that it was posted by ROTC to the college. The paperwork takes some time to get done and processed. You need to plan for this as it wasn't told to us until after FOW had started in August, for OOS cadets this can be a lot of money upfront. This is the first fall they started this and it caught a lot of the OOS cadets off guard. My DD has gotten the monthly stipend of 420, books stipend $600 per semester, uniform reimburse is this spring $800 (you have to pay for them at NSC), and he did receive a corps scholarship of 1000 per semester. All in all it has gone smoothly with reimbursements, once you get everything set up. Be prepared, this will be frustrating for your cadet and they need to do it on their own for the most part. Corps life is tough on incoming fish and parents, but definitely worth it!

Great info - Thanks for sharing. So with the Scholarship - what did you estimate your out of pocket for OOS tuition for year 1? Not including travel or personnel expenses?

He has been reimbursed for all tuition through the scholarship, but he had paid 12,300.00 in the fall prior to being reimbursed OOS rate until ROTC approved. It is tough to tell with how they set up the fee structure etc.... 1st semester after all reimbursement he paid 2700.00 out of pocket for R&B/fees. I'm not counting books, uniforms, stipends in this total. He did have quite a few other local scholarships 1st semester. We were planning about 5000.00 per semester for R&B plus fees (there are a lot of them figure 1500.00) before other scholarships. Not all fees are reimbursed by ROTC money. This semester his first payment was 2350.00 (6100.00 fall semester). Cadets have to prepay again prior to getting the ROTC money as they have to have paperwork filed again and I think have to pass their PT tests. Be prepared to pay upfront and wait for reimbursement. Each cadet is a little different. Meal plan about 2400 they are required to take a standard one and those are automatically taken out at the beginning of the semester (cadets eat breakfast and dinner together as an outfit 3-4 times per week (I think) dorm was 2742.00 per semester. I hope this makes sense. We are still learning.... Just be prepared for upfront out of pocket money each semester. I believe this is unique to A&M for how ROTC tuition is paid.

Non-Corps of Cadets Aggie here from Class of '92 - Here is a link to a blurb on each of the Corps outfits. Not much info but a little. My son has gotten emails from three or four of them looking for recruits but he is not engaging until he is sure he is going there (Plan B to academies). I presume this was triggered from his Spend the Night with the Corps with L-1.

Great info here - and great seeing my old Company logo...

I will tell you, some of the logos and some of the Company names have changed in the last 3 decades...looking back, a few were quite inappropriate:oops:

DH was class of '90 A-2...oh the stories he tells!
I was '85..it was a different time (and a different world). I have tried to tell my wife and kids some of my stories, but they almost seem as if they couldn't possibly be true. They are!!!

It's a lot different now from what I hear; way more focus on academics and GPA. Better be at $52K per year OOS.

My DS just received a 3yr AD AROTC Scholarship. We are super excited, but realizing we will still have a large amount out of pocket. We are still awaiting acceptance to Texas A&M and he missed the deadline for the scholarships through TAMU, but glad to see through this thread that he should still receive in state tuition, my big question is will that only be for the last three years or will it count freshman year as well? Wondering if not, can he go to school somewhere in state(MI) with ROTC then transfer to TAMU his sophomore year? I am struggling to find information. Thanks

Thanks for the warning/notice. Seems like aggressive billing and DS has to perform for the eventual payment reimbursement. A captain at another School’s NROTC unit we had looked at mentioned that his NROTC grads in general were more self reliant than those in the Sevice Academy who were “catered to”
