I got a 1280 on my sat as was wondering how this stacks up. What should be like my target score that if I hit I’m very solid. Thanks

You should be doing that type of research yourself - directly from the USCGA website class profile:

Standardized Test Scores

Median SAT: Math 660, Critical Reading 650, Writing 6

The higher you score the better your academics look. I suspect a 1400+ is very competitive. Learn to do that type of research, which will help with engaging the Academy Admissions reps. more substantively.

I never get when someone asks for a 'target score' in taking standardized tests. No one goes into these tests planning to get a certain number of questions wrong or intending to skip a number of questions, so I don't understand how you would take the test any differently by having a target in mind.

I guess I’m more or less asking for what competitive sat scores are for the uscga

I got in with a 1300 660 mat and 640 reading. This doesn’t account for the various leadership roles and numerous, highly-involved extracurriculars I had.

I got denied with a 1360 back in 2015.

My son got a 1430 - 710 English, 720 Math. He was also a National Merit commended scholar, whatever that’s worth.

SA's superscore...so take it several times. Even try the ACT, as some do better on that test. These tests are only one of the factors for admissions.

My DS got a 1410 (780M 630R). Applied EA and got deferred to RA and then denied in 2019.

FWIW he also got an LOA from USAFA. Each SA evaluates applicants differently based on how they are trying to make up their class.

My DS did not take the essay portion and was asked why he didn’t at his MOC interview for KP. His ACT was 33 but like everyone else is telling you scores are just one part of the admissions picture. That said, you should be looking to take both tests with essay portion a couple of times to give yourself the best chance. Also if your goal is to attend a SA and commission into the Coast Guard do not overlook USMMA as another route. These appointments are extremely competitive and you’d be wise to give yourself as many avenues as possible. Good luck

My DS got 1480 (760 reading & 720 math). He did extremely well on the PSAT and is a National Merit Finalist. He applied RA and received an appointment.

As much as I agree with the advice that USCGA looks at the whole candidate, I’ll try to answer your question. Your target should be the very best score you are able and/or capable of submitting. A score that will not detract from an otherwise stellar admissions package will likely need to be very close to the 14-1500 range. A 1280 is unlikely to move the needle in the direction needed for an appointment, especially a direct appointment. For an otherwise very strong candidate, your 1280 may not be disqualifying, but it is unlikely to help your case for admission and might hurt.
