I'm applying for the Class of '16 & just finished Summer Seminar! I have a small tattoo, about 2 inches long & 3/4 inch tall, located on my hip/lower abdomen area. Will this be a problem in my medical exam coming up ?? Will I have to get a waiver for it ??

Referring to USNA Body Alteration Policy and Procedures:

Location: Tatoos/body art/brands that meet the 'content' requirements above will not be visible in the Summer White Uniform - either on the skin that shows outside of the uniform or through the fabric. All tattoos/body art/brands on the head, face, neck or scalp are prohibited.

I'm sure the online community here'll be able to fill you in with a lot more detail, but from an initial scan through the official documents it looks like you're in the clear - assuming its an 'appropriate' tattoo.

Of course you'll have to report it to DoDMERB, have them have a look at it and they'll make the ultimate decision.

It has been a few years since tats have been an item of discussion, but at the time of last discussion, about 2007, the word was that the uniform used as a standard was the issue bathing suit. All things have a tendancy to evolve over time so this also may be different now, but you need to find out what the standard is. About the worst thing that will happen if the tat is found offensive is that you will be required to have it removed - and they are serious. BTW, according to Admissions the event that brought this issue to the surface involved two incoming plebes who refused to have their tats removed - when they persisted after some serious discussion of the consequences, their appointments were revoked.
