I go to the Naval Academy, and I have a question about my taxes. I am a youngster, and plebe year my parents claimed me as a dependent, but this year I'm filing my own. I lived in Kansas before I came here, but now my parents live in Missouri. So I'm just confused as to which state I'm supposed to file with.

If you claimed Kansas when you entered the military and have not changed that status, such as by changing your driver's license or voter registration, you remain a resident of Kansas. You will retain that residency until you change it. Typically, that won't occur until you become an Ensign (or later).

Just as an upside, many States do not require taxes for active duty military on permanent duty status in another state. If I remember correctly I also claimed my Plebe for dependent status Plebe Summer and first half of Plebe Year for Federal Taxes but had to drop her 2nd year. Then she had no Tax obligation in her home State the following years although still Federal obligation . Check your State web site as there may be forms that need to be filled out for active military and signed by a Company Commander. Our State forgives drivers license fee and vehicle registration fee also for active duty (check your home State DMV). But as with every government agency there are Forms and Forms to fill out.

Missouri passed a law in July 2016 such that active duty military pay is tax exempt whether your duty station is out of state or in state.

FYI. Turbo Tax offers a military discount. Online program is very easy to use - walks you through step by step.
