I was talking with my sister the other day, and she commented that she got an email from USCGA advising her that she had been used as a reference for a USCGA applicant. She was surprised, because the candidate had not even told her to expect the email, and also because she thought that she would be the last person he would ask to be a reference.

I'm a USNA BGO, so I know that USNA specifically asks for an evaluation from junior year math and english teachers, so the candidate doesn't get to chose the teacher. Is this true for USCGA as well ?

As an aside, Sister also commented that she had heard that USCGA didn't need congressional nominations ... is that correct ?

For the USCGA you are required to have four recommendations. As you have stated you need an English instructor and math instructor. According to the CGA Application it says, "Your current English instructor, or your instructor from last year." This is the same for the math recommendation as well. So applicants have the option of asking their current Math or English teacher or their English or Math teacher from last year.

Whoever asked your sister for a recommendation had the option to ask someone else, unless that student had her for two consecutive years.

Applicants at the CGA do NOT need congressional nominations.

The Math and English are required and the other two recommendations are optional.

The four recommendations I am referring to are the Math recommendation, English recommendation, your school counselor/appropriate school official recommendation, and your PFE "recommendation" or results.

Applicants are allowed to have up to two additional recommendations. However, these are not required.

"You may use an instructor from any humanities course with writing requirements, if an English instructor is not available."

This is directly from the recommendation request page in the on line application.

For a teacher to first hear about a recommendation letter request from the Academy rather than the student, seems like the wrong way to go.

I would think that the proper thing to do (from the candidate's perspective) is to ask the teacher if he/she would be willing to write a recommendation letter well in advance of typing that EMail address into the CIS interface (as that is what generates the EMail to the teacher, with directions/link to upload the letter to the Academy).

Also, if you're going to ask anyone for a recommendation letter, you had better make sure it's going to be a glowing recommendation.

That's why Sister brought this up the other night. First , she was surprised by the email. Candidate should have given her a heads up that it was coming. Sec0nd, looks like candidate really doesn't have a choice but to ask her- she had him both junior and senior year.
