Hello. I'm new to this forum and am excited to participate while I traverse the long road of applying to all the service academies.

I'm just finalizing my senior year schedule and wonder if anyone has any opinion/experience with being a TA during their senior year of high school. I was asked by 2 former AP history teachers to be their assistant this coming year. I am inclined to accept since history will be my college major. Curious if anyone has an opinion on how that might look on service applications? The TA classes will only replace 2 elective slots so I will still have a very full, AP intensive schedule which includes a Friday exernship at FlightSafety International. Any opinions or advice on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

First things first: Are you taking the hardest classes your school has to offer, especially in STEM and English? If so, then you should be set schedule-wise. Then, are you active in athletics and leadership? If so, then you seem well rounded.

So to the matter of being a TA: Is it paid or unpaid? If the former, then admissions will treat it like any other job. If the latter, then they’ll treat it like a volunteer role. The fact that you’re supporting AP classes or your future major likely won’t matter.

Take the TA role because it’s something you want to do — as with any job — not because it might look good on your USAFA application.

Thank you for the reply (and advice)!

Schedule: I believe I have taken all possible AP courses offered that I qualified for (8 total). I only got a B+ final grade in pre-calc so I was put into regular Calculus for senior year. I am using a calculus tutor this summer (and tru the school year) to get to a better place math-wise.

Athletics: 3 yrs varsity tennis team. Maybe a 4th if I join senior year but season doesn't start until March

Leadership: 4 yrs Civil Air Patrol-achieved Billy Mitchell and just promoted to Cadet Commander of squadron, Boys State Delegate, High School Peer Leadership Program

In addition, I really do enjoy history of all types so the TA positions seem like a dream class to me

Sounds like you’re all over it, @JD613. Definitely show USAFA that you can handle calculus, because you’ll see plenty of it once there. Also make sure you have chemistry and/or physics covered to optimize your chances. You’ll see plenty of that too. Have fun!
