At the end of Fall 2019 semester my mid fell .04 below required gpa, while already on academic probation for nrotc. (that semester there were numerous issues, including death in the family, change in major). My mid felt that it was over and enlistment was the preferred option when faced with a PRB. Thankful to the advice here based on others' experience. My mid prepared for yet another Performance Review Board (PRB) at the start of the Spring 2020 semester. After a stressful spring semester for me as the mom worrying for my child, my mid rebounded with a 3.6 gpa and shortly after was taken off LOA status. Phew! And yes- we had to pay for the spring semester ourselves. Now I only have 1 year left for this one to continue the parental 'worry' that goes on inside my brain....just make it one more year! :)

While every person's experiences are fact specific, I want to thank others who were supportive and offered sage advice.
My mid's saving grace was the fact that all the other NROTC requirements were always met-PRT, classes, leadership, etc and but-for the gpa issue, there was never any behavioral, etc issues.

So- this is offered as a take-away if you've read this far! for those newly starting college with ROTC, or applying to college, please keep in mind, you can be at the top of your class in HS and attend a university with every other kid who was also at the top of their class, and still risk getting a 'D' or failing a college class. Studying in college is not the same as regurgitating and repeating information the teachers want you to hear when in high school- even those 'college level HS classes'. Don't be afraid to ask for help- early and often- even if you feel you do not need the help. Attend office hours of your professor- even if you think you know the material- let them get to know who you are so you are not some random student they never met. This is crucial- because if you are in between a grade- it may help bump your grade up if the professor knows who you are and sees that you have demonstrated interest in his/her class. Like my mid, you may only get 2 grades the entire semester- a midterm, and a final to figure out where you stand academically with the class, but by then it is too late and you may find yourself below the required gpa!

For those who may be similarly impacted by attending a PRB- something you never want to attend- it is imperative that you take it seriously. Be prepared for it. Be prepared to face and admit to your shortcomings while having a concrete plan to how you will not repeat the same thing! I realize with COVID everything will be different- but you CAN DO IT!

Again, thanks to others for their advice. :)
