Less than 12 months ago I had no idea that the Naval Academy existed, but somehow they found me. I am glad to have found this forum with so many caring and knowledgeable people(Yes, Dr.Mom I have a follow-up for those shots). Waiting it out in CPR is not fun and a few minutes ago I just received an e-mail from the USNA. I was accepted to NAPS in Rhode Island. Could someone please tell me the pros and cons of NAPS? Thank you.

Congratulations! NAPS means you have just a few things to work on but the Academy wants you!

NAPS is just that, a prep school designed to help you polish your skills so you will ne ready for Academy life. Have you been to the website yet? Looked at the photos on Facebook?

Most USNA candidates would give ANYTHING to receive NAPS! As someone else said, it is almost a guaranteed ticket to USNA. It allows one extra "prep" year for you to be ready hit the bricks running at the Academy. It is a vote of confidence that the admissions folks feel you have what it takes and that the extra year will better prepare you.

Here are some pretty impressive folks who did NAPS:
The ONLY "con" I can think of, is that if you have a four year NROTC scholarship, you can commission tuition free in four years wheras NAPS+USNA will take you five.

Congrats. Yes it's a golden ticket. More importantly it's a focused year of academic prep that will set you up for success at USNA. You will learn college level time management with the demands is military obligations and physical requirements in an environment less stressful than Plebe Year. You will be welll prepared for Plebe Year. You will also be able to adapt to life away from home and making appropriate adult decisions prior to your actual Plebe Year. It's a year where you make good money. You pocket much more than you will Plebe Year. Make a ton of friends. If USNA and being a Naval Officer is your goal, you have been handed an amazing opportunity.

And......... you can take your car and don't have to cut your hair! LOL I hope that's true if my DD gets NAPS... she worships her car AND her hair!

Edit: If DD gets an appointment, I'm selling that car so fast it will make her hair fall out! LOL

Edit edit: So happy for you I could burst!

Dear Track Girl. Your excellence is being recognized with a golden opportunity! The pros are as everyone listed above--but also you will be in beautiful Rhode Island for the year surrounded by young men and women as motivated as you are to learn to lead and to serve our Nation. Maybe the greatest benefit is that you will arrive at Annapolis in the summer of 2018--along with your best shipmates and you will know how to do everything. The con? You will spend five years to earn a BS--but you know what, our lives are long--and perspective-wise at 18, that might seem like forever but it is nothing, you will be so busy and have such great adventures...and many people having lesser experiences spend five years working on their bachelors degree. You will be wiser and better informed as you move through your academic and military program at USNA--and be better placed to make the service selection and get the type of specialty that you want. Be blessed and be happy! Congratulations.

(Also, I am glad you followed up on the vaccination issue.)

Yes it will take 5 to get a Bachelors, but if you stay 20, that year at NAPS counts towards that. It also counts as a year towards military pay, so your pay jumps for years of service come a year earlier than those who were direct appointees who commission. So another pro! The only con is honestly an extra year. Right now a year seems like a huge amount of time. You will soon learn that it is nothing.
