The “BFE”

DD has not received a BFE. I'm wondering what's going on, she can take it or leave it.

DD got hers yesterday, with the accompanying letter being dated March 27. I think they are coming, will either go to the Appointee or the ALO, and are a nice keepsake.

My DS received his "BFE" in the mail yesterday. It also included information about notifying your ALO of when your school's award ceremony is. That way they, or someone official, can attend.

USAFA class 2017 was the last class to get an actual Big Fat Envelope. It contained a letter of congratulations and basic instructions and forms for new appointees. They have since used the Big Fat Email to welcome the incoming class. What is being pictured is actually the appointment certificate.

Did you get notification/portal update before your certificate, or did it just co.e in the mail?

My DD portal just changed to accepted!! Wohoo it was back dated to 4/5/19. We checked it last night and nothing. But at 2:30 am it all changed. Wow. BFE on the way??? Can anyone advise?
Congrats!! Make sure to add her to the appointment thread! I would suspect an appointment certificate is on it's way!

Congratulations! Did your DD get the email notification or was she just trolling her portal at 2:30 am?! JK

skismuggs is technically correct. The mythical BFE actually existed a long long time ago in a far distant land. It consisted of everything that is now on the appointee portal and also a letter announcing the appointment. The appointee certificate used to go to the ALO and was presented at awards nights. Today the appointment announcement is made via the portal. It is followed later by the appointee portal--those things required for pre-inprocessing (the old BFE). What some are now calling the BFE is actually the appointee certificate. USAFA stopped sending the certificate to the ALO last year since some ALOs were unable to make presentations and sent it directly to the appointee. USAFA wanted the appointees first and foremost to receive their certificate. Last year the certificate was simply mailed and no other correspondence came with it. This year USAFA is also including a letter to the appointee on how to make arrangements for the certificate to be presented at an awards ceremony. USAFA wants the appointees to both get their certificate and be recognized at their school, squadron, or at another awards ceremony. There is still a challenge that an ALO won't be able to present it due to distance, timing, etc. But USAFA wants the candidate to get recognized even if the certificate is presented by a school or community official. Please contact your ALO to see if they are able to make the presentation. If not you may ask your school to do it. So--long story longer--if you wish to call the appointee certificate a BFE go ahead.

I'm glad they've started sending it to the appointee. DD (c/o 2018) never received hers because her ALO, not the same one her brothers had/have, lost it. Kind of a bummer.

USAFA notice of appt. in his portal during the week of Dec 8-15, received a confirmation letter shortly after portal announcement, and just rec'd BFE with formal USAFA Appointment Document suitable for framing in slipcover along with commandant's letter two days ago

Trying to respond to USAFA BFE questions:

Missed a few words at beginning: Originally I said, "My DS received an LOA Nov 30, MOC nomination Dec 6, USAFA notice of appt. in his portal during the week of Dec 8-25.... (and so forth, see above)"

My DS received the appointment letter/blue binder yesterday. Got his MOC call on 3/7. Ironically it arrived on the same day as his grandfather's funeral, so we are jokingly saying that Grandpa made it happen. It was a rough day, but getting that in the mail helped a little bit.
That brings tears to my eyes..congratulations. So sorry for your loss and prayers for Comfort, Peace and Understanding in this season of life.

Thank you. My father-in-law was a great, great man. Both his sons followed him into the Air Force and now his grandson will as well. He was so happy to hear the news that DS got into USAFA.
