Shiloh Smiles, Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division Dam Neck Activity cybersecurity specialist, has been selected as a member of the inaugural U.S. Women’s Cyber Team, comprised of twelve of the top-ranked females in the cybersecurity field. Smiles is also a member of the U.S. Cyber Team — a team made up of 30 cybersecurity professionals. She will participate in multiple competitions with both teams, including the International Cybersecurity Challenge in Santiago, Chile, Oct. 28 – Nov. 1. Smiles graduated from The Citadel in 2022 with degrees in Computer Science and Cybersecurity. As a member of the Corps of Cadets, Smiles was a member of The Citadel’s Department of Defense Cyber Institute.

I was curious... She's in the civil service but not in the Navy, and the article doesn't mention whether she was a cadet or a non-cadet Citadel student. Thank you for clarifying.

I wonder if she s a product of this fledgling program, an excellent path for those whose path to military service is blocked or federal service is a better fit - the Cyber Corps:

Capt MJ - The Citadel (like all SMCs) received multi million grants to startup a DOD Cyber Institute that is linked into the Cyber Corps Scholarship for Service program. I have known several cadets at The Citadel who took advantage of this scholarship program to serve their country and earn scholarships that are quite generous. The Cyber Institutes are open to ROTC cadets too, and they gain valuable additional training and participate in seminars and cyber competitions. The Scholarship for Service is a great alternative to military service for those who either can’t or choose not to join the military but desire to serve their country.

I knew The Citadel was one the list of participating schools, but the nomenclature was a bit different. You know this is one of the links I always use in my “if the military door closes but you want to serve” posts. I think knowledge of the program will grow quickly.

Cybersecurity and Cyber Operations is one of the hottest majors in college today….and the military, government and business cannot find enough applicants for the jobs they have open. I spent the last decade of my career at a Fortune 50 corporation fighting industrial espionage and most of it was due to cyber crime. And it’s only going to get worse with AI.

Interesting datapoint - DS soon to finish combined BS/MS in cyber at a well regarded school. Had a return offer from a big 4 accounting firm in their cyber consulting group after summer internship. Then they started delaying start dates and training programs due to lack of work (or so the scuttlebutt says). So he's going to work for a hedge fund instead.
