Capers Hall is one of the oldest academic buildings on The Citadel's campus in Charleston, and home to the College's liberal arts programs, Cyber Operations, and Security & Intelligence Departments. Most Alumni have spent time in this iconic building. It is one of the most visable of the college's buildings at the entrance to the 300 acre campus. Because of its historic designation within the City of Charleston, the proposal to replace it with a new and larger building created opposition from the City's architectural review committees. The new design has finally cleared all reviews and while following the architectural design of the campus, it will be a much larger facility with many new features, including a Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility, or SCIF — an enclosed area used by military and intelligence personnel with security clearances to access sensitive intelligence data. Capers Hall is named after Ellison Capers, former mathematics professor, Confederate Army general, Episcopal Bishop of South Carolina and Chancellor of Sewanee, the University of the South. Below is an artist"s rendering of the new building. Construction will start soon, following completion of Bastian Hall, the new home of the college's Business School.
